The yellow thing on the stern of the carrier is there to assist with line-up for the LA. It is also there to distinguish the stern of the ship from the LA. Imagine looking at an all grey vessle for a landing area that is also grey. If you were low on the approach for the entire trip down the glide slope, and this marker wasn't there...you might get too close to the ship before realizing that you were too low. At that point, you might not be able to correct your altitude in time to avoid impacting the ship or having a ramp strike (you land way short in the LA and hit the corner where the flat top of the carrier and the stern of the carrier meet...the ramp).

This feature is lit at night to give the same visual reference.
