Well I have just about melted my brain on this one and have nothing. it is probaly something pretty simple. Thats the worst part.

There was ice in the punch. And the ice actually had the poison in it. By drinking early there wasn't really much poison if any. As time went on, the ice melted, releasing more poison. Therefore, people who drank it later drank more poison and died.

Thus causing perpetual confusion between not only them, but the whole family, friends and probably remaining an eternal thorn in the side of their respective companions.

Another possibility is that it is a 1. If you eliminate all the ones, you have 2,3 in order.
Seems far fetched, so drop us a clue. My ear wax is starting to melt.
