Does anyone have a good easy way replace a Jato transmission case? I had a nasty cartwheel today that ended up snapping the upper arm linkage that connects to the transmission case. I have already successfully replaced the one side that was broken... In 2 hours. It was a relatively easy fix, It just took a rather large amount of time to do. I had no hang ups or head scratching moments, it was 2 hours of non stop assembly and reassembly. I completely disassembled the back of the jato, all the way up to the engine, with the exception of the steering hubs and arms , which I pulled the pins out and set the assembly aside whole. The shock tower had to be taken out as well as the braking mechanism, which by the way because of the snap, the brake disk was broken in half and I was unsuccessful in finding any remains of it in the dirt. Over all it was a pain in the a$$ to tear down and rebuild. I can't figure out why traxxas would connect a such a fragile essential part to the car to such a deeply implanted part in the car. Luckily it was a very inexpensive crash, 5 bucks for the trans case and 4 for the new brake material. But I digress. Does or has anyone found an easier way to replace this for the future? Something that takes on the underside of an hour maybe??

P.S. Is it possible, or safe to put in a double disk brake setup on the jato? One disk I have found is rather insufficient (and does not last long at all) to stopping this vehicle from a 50 mph. plus acceleration into a turn.

Sorry man but unless you just become extremely fast at doing so which you will the more you have to do it. Theres only 1 way that i know of to change them besides keep a spare complete gearbox and swap them out but you still have to break it down a bit to do so. I spent the same time on a customers jato installing steel shafts and checking his brakes. 2.5 hours labor.
 
When I converted my Jato into a truggy I took a hard hit on the wing that snapped an ear off the tranny case. Instead of messing with all the gears and brake setup and what have ya, I bought a new one to replace the whole thing. It was cheap and done in like 10 minutes.
 
what i did was to mod the back end of the trans case. the mod is to reverse the screw direction, of the screw that goes into bat box from the trany case, so the screw threads into the trany case from the back. we are modding only one screw, the one in the middle at the bottom. i got some 3 mm brass inserts. re move the screw that goes in through the trany case, into the bat box plate. brill out the trany case to take the insert, then put the insert into the hole you just drilled, 'from the back', when you run a 3mm screw in, the insert will expand and lock to the case. the add a hole the bat box bottom plate so a wrench goes through the bat box plate and gets to the screw. this mod works on a plastic or aluminum just the same. i hope i was clear.

When i was converting my jato to 1 speed it wasn't that hard in my opinion to pull the whole gear box out and then take it apart and put it back togather.. just a matter of not being intimidated .... I took a couple photos when i converted my tranny to 1 speed. But then i sold it ... anyways heres the shots i took .

This is where i sort of forgot to take pictures because i was just sort of moving along with out thinking about it.

But anyways take the battery pack lid off, take the battery pack out.

There are screws inside where the battery pack is, when you unscrew those you will discover the read diff assembly.

You then need to un screw the whole shock tower, arms, suspension, turnbuckles, and sway bar. you're rear assembly with some gentle tugging should just pop right out. and look like this

Personally i think thats the hardest part... After that mainly you need to unscrew the part of the tranny that go onto the chassis. I drilled a hole in the dust guard to get to the tranny support screw, made it big enough to fit the allen wrench, so i don't have to remove dust guard.

I also leave the front two motor screws tight so i don't have to worry about gear mesh(I still check it)when reinstalling.

NewEra Models makes a support plate to help from ripping the ears off.

If i am just replacing the gears I leave the brake assembly on.
