RCTalk Members Map Update

In the past a member or team of members has maintained an off-site Google Map of users locations. Members come and go and people lose interest in maintaining the map. Well today, we no longer have to worry about that.

Introducing the new RCTalk Members Map - https://www.rctalk.com/forum/rctalk-membermap/

This members map is hosted right here on RCTalk and uses your existing Location field as its source. Don't want your location listed on the members map, no worry - by default all users location are set to NOT show on the map.

So if you want your location to show up on the RCTalk Members Map you MUST opt-in. To opt-in is easy, simply go to your account details - https://www.rctalk.com/forum/account/account-details and check "Show me on the membermap".

The members map will ONLY show users who have opted into the map AND has been active on the site in the last 8 months. Meaning only active users will be shown on the map and not cluttered with users who no longer visit the site.

To find the user map you can use the link above or also find it listed under the "Members" menu drop down:

So what are you waiting for? Update your account details with your location and opt-in now!

Original post, no longer used:

Hi guys, TRD here. Last night I had this great idea, what if I got an online US state map had the RCT fam share their general locations, and put their general locations along with their usernames (and maybe first names) on the map? So basically everyone, tell me in the comment your GENERAL locations (if you're willing, don't put in your exact street or anything, because of safety reasons!), and perhaps your first, real names (last name not needed, again, safety first!). I'll then chart out the locations with their respective usernames/first names. This way, we'll be able to visually see where our fellow members are! I'll update the map every few days, so if a week has gone by and you don't see your name and location, please tell me again! I won't really add anybody by myself, if you want to be on the map, tell me so! I think this is gonna be fun, and as always, feel free to have some fun in the comments!

For those of you outside the US, that's fine, as Google Maps...maps the whole world! Lastly, I know very well that all you guys are comedians, so some of you are going say your location is "in your recliner" or "in Heaven" (or in the opposite of Heaven...Lord help you), and so on; that's funny and all, but I can't map those locations, so do give your actual location after you've had your laugh! :)

I've started out by putting myself on the map, as you can all see. Admins like @WoodiE, @Slick2500, ect. can join in too!

Cheers, Isaac

EDIT: Ok, so thanks to @WickedFog, instead of using an online map and manually adding each person, I'll just link to a Google map thing I made instead. Once you tell me your general location, I'll drop a pin in that area, somewhat randomly, so sorry if the pin is on top of a school, or parking lot! 🤣🤣 Remember to look about, because some people live outside the US, like @Stigtheone.

Here is the Google Map!

Edit 2: Also, please separate your name from your location with a comma or something! I can always at anytime change the location and/or name, so lemme know if change is needed! Also, if there needs to be any corrections, please tell me too!

Cool idea mate, I'll start off as you mentioned me in the post!!!
I'm Stig and I live near Durham, UK!!!
Thanks! Didn't mean to call you out or anything there, I'll add you when some more people chime in (this way I don't have to update it every single time someone says something)!

Can you read the words and stuff on the map ok? Is it too small?

Very comfy. Sorry, Terre Haute Indiana.

Why don't you do this on google maps? Then everyone can be on there.

Yep, I searched it.

Seems like more upfront work, but easier in the long run. So basically people tell me their locations and I just plug it into the map? I'm working on creating one RN.

Thanks! Added you to the map, I'll replace the current map with the updated one soon.

I believe that is it once you get it setup. But then you could just put the link to the map and it would automatically update when you add names - I am pretty sure.

Cool so I don't have to plot each point!
Yeah, and you don't have to upload a new map with each change. Much less work for someone who is supposed to be studying 😉

My only issue with the Google map is that it will share everyone's near exact location, and I don't want that. Is there a way around that? I haven't done this "create a map" thing before, if you couldn't tell!

I just got an idea, I'll just drop a pin in the general area, somewhat randomly. So if anyone sends a package to the semi-random place I picked, and it goes to some random guy, don't blame me!

Boom, done! Check it out!
It won't be funny if you end up a greeter at Walmart 🤣 Now back to work!
You're literally saying the same thing as my parents...I'm on a break right now, don't worry!

Tom, Horseheads, N.Y.
Thanks Tom! I've switched to a shared Google Map thing, check the updated original post for the whole story and the link! Lemme know how well the map works
If you just put the town and state in, it will just point to the user's city. Not their exact location.
Like what I did in the map? Check the updated original post for the link!
