alright, christmas is coming around kinda fast and i am asking for dsl so i can get xbox live for halo 2!! ya we still got slow ass 56k but its better than nothing. My dad wants to now how much it costs and what all we need to get it. we got two phone lines right now, one phone, and one we use just for internet. i no pretty much how it works and everything but i just need to no about a modem and wire splitters and stuff. I am pretty sure there is a 200 dollar set up fee. and its like 50 bucks a month for the service through netins. i live abour 5 miles north of our closest town and they offer rural dsl. So if somebody can explain what all i need it be great. preciate the help

If you have cable, you might want to look into that. Cable companies are offering a lot of good packages, including waiving set-up fees and reduced rates for 6 months. I pay roughly 42.99/month from earthlink.

I have a simular set up as Diver I payed $30 for the first six months and $40 a month after that with Cox Communications I did have to pay a set up fee though and they give you an option to rent a cable modem for like $10 a month but it is better to just buy your own.

If you have problems and you use your own cable modem, they are a lot less inclined to help you though.

I have comcast cable and I use thier modem. I think modem rental is like $2 a month and the internet access is around $40.

I connect faster at home than I do at work over T1 lines...

So far every problem I have had they have helped me out, maybe I shouldn't have said better just a little cheaper atleast in my case.

i say if you can get cable go with that .... then your dad can drop the 2nd phone line and the internet service you have currently ... between the 2 it should be a wash with getting cable ...

i am not sure if you can run dsl and use the phone at the same time ... i do know that 90% of the time a basic dsl line is slower than a cable line ....

Although, if you live out in the boons, you more than likely can't get cable and dsl is the only alternative since it travels over existing phone lines.

But if you live too far out you can`t get dsl and yes WsW-WYATT-EARP you can use dsl and the phone at the same time and cost is the about the same as 2nd line and internet service. My dad has it and it costs him about $35 or $40 a month but it is slower than cable. I can`t get cable(yet, its 1 1/2 miles down the road) and i`m too far for even basic dsl so I`m stuck with dialup.
Guess that a disadvantage of livin in the country... :arrr:  dsl loses bandwith the longer the wire....

Not that it will help you now but I heard on the radio that the local power companies are going to offer Internet through the power lines within the next 1-2 years. They will concentrate on the rural communities without DSL or Cable first. Its now a proven technology and the infrastructure is being installed and refined as we speak.

On a second note this will bring down the price of broadband across the board. Just think, everyone that has electricity will be able to get broadband without distance limitations.

A quick search shows me its already available in some places.
