Pullstart Driving Me Crazy

I have an mgt and the pull start strung broke so i thought w/e. I take the pullstart off the truck and find out that the spring is broken too. Then after some heat and bending i got the spring to have a hook on it again. the only problem is i can't get it back in its case because its so hard to hook the sprin in. HELP PLZ. thanx in advance.

I found the best way to deal with a pullstart spring is to wipe it clean end to end with a paper towel. Then slowly wind it in your hands while holding it with your thumb and forfinger. When it's all wound tight, get a pair of needle nose pliers to pinch it so you can get it where you want it in the housing, then release it slowly.

It takes time and practice to get it to do what you want, but I can rewind a pullstart and have it all together in about 10-15 minutes now. I've had to do a few...

Man I know exactly what your talking about those thing are a pain in the arse lol. I tried the other night with mine for about 2 hrs and couldnt get it back in. I had my wife help me lol she has way more patience than me I think that is the key thing to have when wrapping the return spring. I would do exactly what Olds suggested he knows his stuff , has helped me in many sitsuations.

Just make sure to clean it with a paper towel before trying to re-wrap it. It's a lot easier to hold onto when there isn't any oil on it. ANd it stings a lot less when you slip, it foings, you get cut.

thnx guys ill have to try that and if i still can't do it would i be able to bring it in to a small engine shop or my LHS to get it fixed?

Not sure about the small engine shop, but some LHS's have guys that work on them that might be able to help.

When I worked in a small engine shop, I would have worked on it for you

The used to be one of the mods that would fix these for ya if ya covered the shipping charges. There was a thread on it along time ago, so I can't member which one.. my bad.. But maybe someone can remember and help ya out. They never seem to work as well as when they were new after this is done though.. Anyway Good luck

I broke my pull start this weekend, and after about an hour of trying to fix it, during which the spring sproinged out and gave me a small cut just below my left eye, I gave up. I've purchased them before and was planning on doing it again when I found an old roto-start back plate in my box. After much dremel "redesigning", I managed to get it onto the back of my Hyper 8 Port. Works great, looks like a crap.

i just got a tiger drive for my .46 in my truckzillaand it s the best thing since sliced breade and only 20 bucks it uses a 7/32 wandthey wanted 9 bux so i used a cut of allen wrench and my drill it so easy I'm gonna use them on all my cars,jmo

i like the pull start because it is more handy then shaft start when i had the pull start i could start my truck on the first pull. just my opinion though. thanx guys

Once my engine is warmed up on my Mayhem I can practically tap the button on my shaft start and it starts right up.
