These are really beginning to tick me off to no end. Last weekend I pulled the cord too hard in my storm and the cord came out. Now this weekend I dissassemble the pull start and put everything back together. It works like a dream until I put it on the engine then it won't return. I'm not even going to get into how ticked off it made a mook like me while I was respooling the recoil assembly. Anyone have any suggestions why it works perfectly when it's not on the engine but fails to recoil when its installed on the engine.

Mine has worked like poop since day one. I never pulled it apart to see why. A little shot of WD 40 in the string hole gets me through most of the day. It always kinda retracted really slow and would leave about 3 inches of string and the handle dangling. A blip of the throtle took care of that. But I find the WD to be its best friend.

I might do that, but thats like killing a headache by cutting your head off. I was looking for a more positive solution.

How do you figure such a comment? RoadRunner's idea seems to be a good one and one I will try once I fix my pull start as well being I'm having a huge problem with the string not recoiling back, if WD4 fixes that then so be it - what else are you looking for?

Positive solution- Get a starter box and ditch the silly sting. I know you were asking about them.

El, do you think you may have wound the spring backwards? That might explain why it would work off of your engine but then not work when you put it on.

If you've got extra string hanging out of your PS, pull a few inches out, tie a new knot in the string and cut off the excess.
Oiling it is a good idea. My ps wouldn't retract right...it made kind of a grinding noise. I took it apart and squirted some 3-In-1 over the coil and that helped a lot.

I am working that one too.

While winding the coil backwards is a posibility the portion of the coil that mounts on the casing only goes one way. Believe me that's one of the things that got me ticked off was when I coiled it backwards and had to reciol is correctly again, then come loose half way through. It was enough to PO the good humor man. Maybe oil is the only way.

Maybe your one way bearing is shot. Or maybe your shaft that keeps the one way bearing on has to much oil on it and it is sliping thats all i can think of......Nick

It cranks the engine fine it just won't recoil. I checked the 1 way and it's great. I even tried more tension on the recoil and that didn't work either.

Well maybe you should get a new recoil spring. It may have enough tension to recoil it back in place when it off but when it is on it may be a whole different story....Nick

I guess that might be what I'll do. Either that or I will just buy a new damn pull start!

Everyone has a different take and experiences. My experience has been nothing but great since I decided to no longet buy PS engines. There are many reasons I made my decision. Power, ease of use are the first two that come to mind. Just remember there are always trade-offs and one is a starter box is heavy.
