Probably a simple problem to Fix

I've recently bought a new RC car from a friend and it will sometimes start ; when it does it runs for a maximum of 8 seconds and stops, why does it do this?

Bad carb settings, air leak, bad fuel, not primed yet, bad plug...

Do you increase the throttle a bit when your starting? Is the glowplug coil glowing a good orange color when heated? Are you taking the heater off right away? How old is the fuel and what's the brand/nitro content?

What's the vehicle/engine?
