As a total noob to rc/nitro, I've been trying to read a bit every night to try and learn more about anything nitro related.

I've just been reading about diffs and I pretty much get it.
I started reading about gear ratios and thought I was getting that too.
eg. a 70t spur and a 20t clutch bell would give a ratio of 3.5:1. Correct?

So then I pull out the badly translated manual for my Smartech winner sport to try and check how many teeth my clutch bell and spur gears have. It doesn't say in the manual but it does say that my first gear ratio is 8.24:1 and 2nd gear is 5.78:1.
So off I went to count the teeth on my CB and it has 23! now if I'm getting this right, wouldnt that mean that my 1st gear spur would have 190 teeth???? Obviously thats not right so either i'm missing something and getting this completely wrong or its just another mistake in my owners manual.
Can someone please clear it up for me?

Cheers,

TheSweeney.

I believe that they are taking into account the gear reduction in the diffs along with the gear reduction of the clutch and spur gears.

If your Smarttech RC is a two speed tranny, the ratios mentioned in the manual are referring to the gear ratios within the tranny.

Your best bet:
1. Get some white out or white paint. Paint one tooth or mark it so that you can keep track of it.
2. Count them up. DO it a couple of times to make certain you get the number consistantly.
3. Repeat this for the clutch bell.

Then you will know.
