About 18 months ago I decided that my guitar playing wasn't going anywhere, so I sold everything.

Big Mistake, man have I missed it. So I sold my Eterna wrist watch, and used the money to buy a new guitar. :D

ESP LTD HM-50

It plays really well, about as well as the Ibanez I had before, only holds the tune much better. I really wanted a guitar with a Floyd Rose tremolo, but this time with locking clamps in the saddle. You need a Floyd Rose tremolo, if you want to "bend it like Satch".

Also picked a nice little piece of kit for on the road practice. The I.K. Multimedia iRig plugin for iPad/iPhone. The app for it is a amp modelling software. It is a bit limited for headphone use, the sound gets distorted badly if you turn it up too much. At a proper level you can hear the strings over the headphone sound. I plan to plug this into an amp, when I get one. I should have a 15w Marshall amp in a few days.

I do have my eyes on some future equipment. Looking at a Peavey Vypyr or Line6 Spider amp. I had a Line6 spider gen1 before, and it was a great amp, very versatile. I need to be able to go from twangy to clean, to light distortion to high gain.

Now I just need to get my finger tips back in shape. Get some callus build up again.

Dont have much of an idea of what your talking about but congrats on getting back into it! If you have the gift of music, keep at it for ever bro.

I would never give music completely. My main instrument is the trumpet.

I've played it since I was 11, so that's 22 years. Not that it shows, I will never be stellar at it. :)

Cool!

Even though my 12 year old son dabbles in electric guitar and I take him to lessons every week, I also have no idea what you are talking about. LOL

His main instrument so far is the Alto Sax. He is switching to the Tenor Sax next year.

Clearly he gets this from my wife who plays the piano. I don't know a musical note from a sticky note.

I played trombone all through high school. Me and my buddy were the only trombones and we sucked so bad that we were literally told at each concert to "act" like we were playing but to not actually play a single not.

Brass wind is really demanding. At the end of a gig, my lips are so worn down I can't put them together to whistle.

LMAO!

My son was playing in a concert that also had the school choir. I was watching this kid in the choir not doing a damn thing when they were singing. He wasn't even bothering to move his lips. LOL

I did 2 years of piano lessons in 6 months, then gave it up and played alto sax in school for 3 years. Forgot everything I ever knew, then bought some keyboards many years later. Now that there's no one to make me practice, I really enjoy it.
...almost forgot to mention that I really have an ear for air guitar. :D

I'd believe you if you said you had an ear for passing wind.

Glad you're getting back in. I did almost the same thing. I gave up the guitar for almost 10 years while my kids were growing up. 2 years ago my daughter decided she wanted to learn to play. She's 15 now and loves it. She motivated me to start playing again. I had hung onto my old Charvel 475 which I really like. And a couple months ago I bought a new Ibanez EW20-ASENT acoustic. Also picked up a Line 6 Spider IV 75 to just play around on. I like the amp because it has tons of effects and built in wah. It's a cheap solid state, but it's good enough for me.

My youngest (11) says she wants to take up drums. So that'll be a good excuse for me to buy a set!

And my oldest has expressed interest in music production/recording. So I'm thinking of slowly piecing together a little portable recording setup in the house. We all have a good time with music even though my daughter is a bit embarrassed when I start running through the old music she doesn't like.

Might be a dumb question but what do you guys play the most, your own stuff or try perfecting known songs? Thats what Id be doing if I could play I think.

I'm grim at writing music. So I just grab a song I like and learn it as well as I can. I have a profound respect for people that can write good music. My daughter has shown a very good talent at it. She has probably a dozen songs she's written. And they're all pretty darn good. I'm hoping that by building a small home studio it will motivate her to write more and get them down on tape. It's really fascinating to watch.

Bart, congrats on the new axe, I dig the ESP's. I think you'd be much happier with the Line 6 setup in the long run, not that the Peavey is a bad piece of kit, just that Line 6 have been doing the modeling thing for a lot longer, and have it down cold. I sold my strat and Vox AD120-VT modeling amp last year because I just didn't devote the time anymore, and I mostly (attempt) to play complex acoustic stuff now. It was a nice rig, and I highly recommend looking at Vox also, they've been in the game as long as any amp maker I know of.

If you can get past the cheesy guitar guy, check this out. Also, I'm not big on the new metal face plate, the old plaid cloth really grew on me.
