A few months ago I had picked up a vga cable and hooked up my desktop to my hdtv, well we are hanging drywall in our dining room so I figured I would hook the computer back up through the tv until we are done, I hooked it up and the windows xp loading screen came up then it said input is not compatible with the signal, I did everything the same as last time, vga from monitor out to PC in on my tv, any advice?

The computer may not be running in a video resolution that the HDTV recognizes. You might try going to 640X480 (the VGA standard resolution) and see if it can display a picture. If it can then you might want to try something like a 1400X900 (That's the 720p resolution).

Slightly off topic but I've had issues sort of like this before when I hooked up our HD cable box to our t.v. The television wouldn't recognize it at first because the box wasn't transmitting in a signal that the t.v. could recognize the way it was hooked up. I had to hook it up to the standard definition connections to see the picture from the box, then set the box up so that it transmitted in the format that my t.v. could recognize, then switch the connections back to the HD connections. I finally got it setup properly but I had to jockey around with connections and format settings to get it to happen.

if its a laptop, it may not be outputting to the vga. there should be a button on your keyboard to toggle it on and off. it should be one of your F keys, and will require you to hold down the FN key to use it.

if that doesn't work, try setting the resolution different, or try to update your video driver.

it's a desktop, I have had it hooked up before I don't know what changed but we are just about done with our dining room so it'll be back in a day or so.
