We want to get a puppy but were not sure how to keep it in the yard. A fence would work but it's hard to drop $4,000 on something we really don't want!

We looked at an underground fence and a wireless fence but I have no experience with either and I'm not sure I really want to put a shock collar on my new pup...Are there any other options for us?

Do you have trees in your yard? You can put up a steel cable "run" for the dog between two trees. Then put a collar and long leash on the dog to give it freedom to move around without getting too far away, or into any danger. I really miss being able to have pets, we had indoor dogs for years as a kid.

I'd say other than putting the dog on a chain or buying a dog pen, there isn't many more options available.

I'm not sure how puppies do with underground fencing, but I know two people who have the PetSafe underground fence for their dogs and give it high reviews. Both have said it takes training the dog on where their limits are but once they learn it's no issue at all.

I have two full grown American bull dogs and put both on a electric fence when they were about 6 months old. There 4 years old now and neither has even wore the collars since they were about 2 years old. After they learn there boundaries you can remove the collar and turn the fence off. If you have a dog that wants to rome after you remove the collar walk him next to the fence with the collar on where he knows his boundaries and where not to go. The collar won't shock him while your walking him along the fence it will just tingle him a little. You can also turn the intensity down if you feel it's to much on the dog depending on size.

A dog on a chain or runner is dangerous for the animal. There trapped if other animals try to attack and can hang them self. A dog pin that you can get at any pet store or lowes/home depot is better than a leash atleast it will protect the dog from being attacked.

Thanks for the input, not sure what were going to do.

If you really love animals outside dogs are great. If your ok with animals you will hate the dog within a few weeks. There kinda a pain in the butt and can get costly.

I like dogs and have had many in the past, just not sure how to contain one at the new place

What kinda dog is it? If its a bigger dog the electric fence is the way to go. I have a yellow that we've had since he was born. And has been on the electric fence since. He's now 7 i believe. About 2 years the fence cot cut under the group when we were doing some work with heavy machinery in the back. The fence hasn't worked since but my dog still stays in the yard because they don't know that its not working, and they don't wanna get shocked. I don't think the electric fence is too expensive either.

Were not sure what kind of dog it will be yet, my son will pick one out once we have secured the yard. It's looking like a wireless fence might be the answer.

Golden retrievers are great dogs. Smart and very loyal and great with kids. When my two are gone that's my next dog. I wouldn't recommend American bull dogs. Mine are great now but when they were young they were aweful. There good with kids though.

If I have a say in the choice it will be a boxer, always been my favorite!

Always had Dachshunds while growing up. Great with families and are very protective of their people. Also extremely stubborn, affectionate and intelligent.
