My MT-1 body came in today, along with the Pearl Purple, Metalic Black and Sprint White.

I have done 4 test pieces on some of the scrap lexan -

very light, medium and heavy (single coats) of Pearl Purple backed in Met. Black and a base Solid Met Black.

I'm doing one other test of Pearl Purple that I will back in white when it dries. OMG - I'm in love with Pearl Purple :)

I just re-planned my color scheme I think :) Pics will follow once the body is complete.

This will all be done via rattle cans btw (dont have an air-brush, and never used one.

You do realize that you are now obligated to post pictures of it when it's done, don't you? Don't hold out on us....

I will post pics both in progress and completed. Tonight I wash the body and apply the Jackal paint transfer. Hoping the liquid mask comes in soon (it was ordered seperately)

I still havent found out if anyone has every put liquid mask over a paint transfer without hurting the paint transfer. My plan is to let the transfer dry at least 24 hours. Only small parts of the transfer will need to have liquid mask behind it if theres going to be a problem with damaging the transfer.

I sketched the hood of the MT1 body last night to scale and then traced the transfer onto the hood to get an idea of size and position, then drew in what I will have as a mask for the second color. It will be quite simple of a design, being my very first attempt at anything like this.

I'm so excited about this project, I'm already planning my christmas list for this year to include all the things I need to learn how to use an airbrush :)

still waiting on the liquid mask to come in. This weekend would have been great for painting :( Stupid slow postal service :)

This is the paint transfer in place. Next step is masking - can't do anything else till its masked :(

I always thought the hourglass was on the underside?.?. nah, I just playin. That looks cool. Color scheme sounds cool. I almost did a color scheme like that for my Escalade but I made a last minute decision to change it. keep the pics comin1

I'm still debating on spraying a very thin coat of white behind the spider - not sure how that will look with the pearl purple on top.

Also thought about spraying a light coat of white, and while it was wet spaying the purple so it "mixed" a little bit ... still havent decided there

I'm sure I'll mess it up along the way somewhere :(

I would think about shading the spider a bit. But don't use full black. The black color of the spider may fade into that. I would mix the purple with just a little black to make it one shade darker than the rest of the purple. That will give the spider the effect of standing "on top" of the purple paint. Will just help it stand out more.

yeah I looked at that one. I didnt care for the light blue and red colors in them.

I started out with the pearl purple/black paint color scheme - then decided to add the spider.

The base coat will be pearl purple backed in black. I did a bunch of tests and that color is just sweet! but I'm afraid that will be too dark behind the spider. I'll also be putting a custom spider web behind the spider. I'll be doing something very similar to the Jackal Hobbies Widow Maker Kit Internal Transfer webbing. The webbing will be in met.black so you'll see the spider on top, then black webbing, then the pearl purple. If I had an air brush (and knew how to use it) I would "fog" the area behind the spider with a white/gray cloud effect. Using Rattle cans, I'm not sure what options I have. I thought if I dusted the back of the spider with white, then painted over that when it was wet, I might achieve close to that effect. I'm running out of scrap lexan to try this on though LOL.

You can paint plastic soda bottles. Cut a 2 liter bottle length-wise and you can paint it like a body. Looking good - Keep the pics comming.

Never thought of using the soda bottles to practice on. My first body, maybe I'll try that.

Only transfer I think I can use out of my set is the center top.
Thinking of putting it on the roof of the cab. Backing and outlining it w/silver. With a silver stripe as wide as the front of the transfer on the hood, couple of smaller spiders in it. The rest of the truck blue.
Good luck with yours. Be looking for some pics. :)

OK - here are the rest of the pics finally. I'm not too thrilled about the outcome, but it is my first. So I guess I should be happy it looks like a truck at least LOL (I should say I wish it came out better than it did)

All Pactra Paint - rattle cans
3 coats Pearl Purple - Backed in 2 coats Metalic Black - then 2 coats White - then 2 coats window tint. Jackal Paint Transfer on hood.

I don't think that looks too bad. I like that purple. Does it kinda change to blue in regular light, too? Not a bad job for your first. I'm sure you learned a lot and the next one will be a step forward...

yes I learned a TON! and yes - when that pearl purple is backed in black it acts like a blue/purple color-change. looking directly at it it looks blue (as in the side pic) but from an angle or the right light its purple.

When I did a bunch of tests to see how much purple and white or black backing, when I saw that color, I was amazed! Thats why I posted "OMG I'm in LOVE!!! " in the first place LOL

Hope my first turns out that good. Got my savage and my buggy fixed. Maybe I'll start on mine soon.

* The liquid mask didnt stick to the back of the Jackal paint transfer, so after cutting out all the webbing on the outside, I was forced to abandon the idea.
* I cut too hard through the liquid mask, leaving exacto cut marks in the body (seemed I either didnt cut all the way through, or I cut to far, that stuff is really touchy)
* My graphic on the side is a pure display of my non-artistic ability (close up you can see that the line isnt straight) - as well it had some bleeding
* The window tint was very runny, and I put it on too thick, it had run lines on the window (not that big of a deal) but it also collected in all the little "pockets" of the body and bleed through the 1 coat of white, 2 coats of black and 3 coats of purple.
* cutting out the body was rough at best, I tied using the exacto, scissors, etc - scuffed the paint in a few places

I did learn a lot though in the process - which is the key thing :) I know what not to do next time. I think I will keep the design much simpler to start out with, and I will definately use lighter coats of paint, and just put more coats on to get the coverage I want. Window Tint is out the "window" and I'll just use black for the window, I dont think I could spray that stuff from a can and have it not run. I may or may not use the liquid mask again, I think part of my problem was I put it on too thick, and there were spots that were still that light blue color and they were spongy like (partly due to the foam brush I used to put it on with). very light coats of the liquid mask will produce better results. I can imagine that with the use of an airbrush it would be much better.

One other problem I'm having after the fact is that it seemd the pain is seperating from the plastic after I crash/flip the truck. Looks like a bunch of air bubbles at all the corners/edges now. I washed the inside with dawn/water and rinsed in hot water, then wiped dry with a towel and then let air dry before I put on the liquid mask - not sure what would cause the paint to not stick. Maybe I touched it with the side of my hand while trimming some of the liquid mask??

Still, going by at 45mph it looks pretty sweet, so I'm happy with it, even though I was hoping for a few other things to come out right.

Dude, it's your first body!!!! You learned a lot from it. Bash the hell out of it if ya don't like it. You would be bashing it if ya did like it.
Look at it and see what ya can do better the next time. You learned a lot from it and the next one will be better. Don't look at all the wrong on it. It looks pretty good. You are picking out all the bad. Get another body and try again. That one will be tore all to hell in 6 months or so anyway.
Let's see some pics of the next one!

I am most critical of my own work too. I painted one about a month ago, and there were several flaws (to me), but my friend that I gave it to and my other buds all thought it looked great! I learned to keep the flaw notes to yourself for future improvement, and just have fun with it. And like digger suggested, after the first rollover, you won't notice them much anyway <G>.
