What do ports mean? what do they do? More ports = better?

Ports are openings in the cylinder wall where air/fuel and exhaust gas get into and out of where the piston is.
More ports means better breathing and more fuel/air.

Used to be a "3 port" was a sport engine that had a relatively wide tuning window with most of the torque down low and lower peak RPM's. The 5+ port engines were higher RPM and generated their power higher in the rpm band. Many of the RTR engines used to be 3 port. Really though, I think they had 4... lol.

Good info. I wasn't aware of that 👍

I'm just regurgitating what I had read or had been told in the past... I"m not sure how accurate it is.

EDIT:
After some googling... appears what I said was just something people said, but turns out may not be true. Figures.

Ahhhh, thats a good link though. This actually affirms what I was saying about the design and quality of the engine being important. Even more important apparently than I thought. I just know I had a Picco P3 that was a much better engine than a 5 Port SH I had once.

"the port configuration is much more important than the port count itself
wink.gif
as is all the measurements of the rest of the engine"
