I have been running a set of Duratrax 5000mah nimhs for a few months now and today one of them got really hot after just a few minutes of run time. Didn't seem to charge very well either. This really pisses me off because I decided to get back into electric cars because they are supposed to be more reliable than nitros. These batteries wern't very cheap either and probably only have about 30 charges on them. I'm thinking about making the jump to Lipos but am not sure about everything I'll have to get for them. This is for a Summit so it will be double the price for everything. You guys have any ideas that can help me?

Hobbyking.com. $100 will set you up nice. I'm surprised about the duratrax pack failing so quick. I've had decent luck with them and haven't heard anything bad. How hot do you normally get your packs out of curiosity?

Well, it depends on if I'm rock crawling with my Summit or doing some high speed runs with it. The last time I ran these batteries I did some of both and they seemed to last quite a long time because I was walking with my 2 and 1/2 year old son around a park.
Got home and they were'nt even very hot. I'm telling you though, one of them won't hold a charge now and iiiis getting very hot after just a few minutes on the charger.

Sounds like a cell went bad. You can tear the pack apart and replace the bad cell/cells. Lipo's so cheap to get into these days, I wouldn't even bother with nimh's anymore. Packs for around $25, chargers starting at around $35. An increase in performance and run time, and cheaper? I'm in.:)

Could you post up some links to what you are talking about because I've been told that for me to run Lipos in my Summit I will have to get a charger, balancer, Lipo cut off for each battery plus the batteries. Doesn't sound cheap to me.

Like I said, hobbyking.com. I've seen 5000mah, 2s Zippy's for around $25 and 2-3s balance chargers starting at around $30. They have some power supplies to run dc chargers for as cheap as $15. Just go to the site and browse around. There's too much to look at to start linking. You'll also need a low voltage cutoff for your esc. Those go for around $20.

If your in the US and don't want to order overseas Habbypartz is a good alliterative

You will need to buy a charge that is lipo ready and a low voltage cut off for each pack!

I've read that you only need to install the lvc on the esc power input that runs the motors. On the evx esc's, you can plug the battery into one of the inputs, turn it on, and the steering will work. The lvc goes on the other input. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'd hate to waste somebody's money or direct them into a dangerous situation.
