I was trying to get to that same point too. I think its a lot more simple than all this too.
At first I thought so too, but I’m pretty sure he said reverse works as it should. As in, he pushes the trigger forward and the more spins in reverse.

My guess is that the esc shipped with reverse disabled, and the reason that it won't recognize "forwards" is because that is actually reverse, and it IS noticing it, but doesn't run the motor "forwards" as it is actually trying to run it backwards. My guess is with the motor installed in your car, the diffs are set up backwards to every other kind of car, and therefore only drives in what seems like reverse, but is actually forwards in a 2wd car. Sorry, that probably doesn't seem easy to understand, but I have a migraine and can't function enough to type it out in a way where its easy to understand. And welcome to the forum!

Thank you! I think you might be correct. I think reverse is disabled and bc it is 4wd the nature of the rally has the differentials reversed. I think once I have the programmer, I can both reverse the direction and activate f/b/r and hopefully this puts this issue to bed. I went through a whole host of changes on the futaba yesterday and I don't believe it is the problem.

Help me out with this one, what do you mean? Unplug that from the channel first?
What I mean is before you try plugging the servo in to a different channel, its important that the servo isnt hooked up to an arm or saver, no other steering components in case it plus a 180 on you and breaks a bunch of stuff.

You ARE better off to wait a day, week for the programmer.

I believe you are just having simple setting issues, not an in depth crash.
Start simple first either way. šŸ˜ŽšŸ‘

Can you just flip your diffs or is it not possible with the way the diff housings are designed on that car?
Thanks everyone for the help- with the programmer it was the 1-2 combo of putting into forward/brake/reverse and reversing the motor. The diffs on the 4wd system for the rally don't seem to compute well with the futaba and the 610r but this combo did the trick. Our retro paint job is finished as well! We still have some decal cleanup to do but hey it's not bad for a couple kids and an amateur.

Love it!
Just finished watching the 2026 Dakar rally - this is my favorite Classic!

The Tamiya 959 was the first thing I thought of when I saw this car.
I'm really wanting to know how it drives, holds up over time...

Your paint job looks 'right' and perfect! šŸ˜
That's the look we were going for. The tamiya 959 was the legend of my youth and the Dakar look was way better than the stock team associated idea (no offense to them). We did throw in some stock stickers and I have some more decals on the way to help further clean up the stripes. Given we just used painters tape and an airbrush I'm proud at how the paint came out. The pearled paint is really neat.
