I have an older hitachi and can definitly vouch for it's picture quality and sound. It's not a high def unit, but it is 60" rear projection. Bought it really cheap 5 years ago and couldn't continue to be happier.
I just recently upgraded my receiver with a Yamaha. Really good stuff. I shopped for a month to find one with all the stuff I wanted/needed.
Considering I live in an apartment, I can't go to loud, so I haven't purchased any mean tower speakers for it. When I do, they will be JBL. Bose sound ok, but when listening to them side by side (off my reciever at best buy), the jbl's blow them out of the water and can be considerably cheaper. Oddly enough, best buy uses my receiver for every single "display" unit in their stores. It made it really easy for me to wander around with a remote to set it how I wanted when shopping for speakers. I currently have jbl front - left/right wall mounts, JBL 10" 150W powered sub, bose center channel (sucks) and the only remenents of my first surround setup are my rear surround speakers which are Phillips. They will become my front jbl's some day when I replace the front's with some nice jbl towers.
I have taken the big screen apart so I could wire the speakers in the tv into my center channel. The hitachi big screen speakers sound tons better than the $200 bose center channel... go figure. I still have the bose center channel wired in, but it only produces high frequencies.
Here's a pic of the TV. The front speakers are the old one's I replaced with jbl's recently. The bose is on top of the tv.
$ for $, hitachi, yamaha and jbl is the route I'm going as money allows. Looks good, sounds good, gets loud... what more do you want? The wife is looking for one of those big screen entertainment centers to make it look more "homey" instead of like a best buy display center...
With $3500, you could buy everything I have and have enough to get a nice set of JBL towers.
My advice would be to shop around and take your time. Have fun!
