there are 3 total types of plugs, Long/standard plug, Short reach plug, and turbo plug.
O.S. is pretty much exclusively short plugs, there are a few engines made BY O.S. FOR another company, so a few will have short reach plugs besides just O.S., if the plug has a tapered thread, its what is called a "turbo" plug, they are very different, and you will be able to tell them apart.
then there is the long/standard plugs.
you can use a short plug, in place of a long reach plug, the engine will not reach maximum performance as the compression will be decreased, but it should run fine, you CANNOT run a long plug in a short plug engine though, the plug will impact the piston and damage things.
if its not a turbo plug, and you cannot find the length of plug elsewhere, it would be safe to start with a short plug, #8 is kind of the "Go-to" for baseline. and go from there if you want hotter or colder.
