So far...

Terrain: Dirt, Grass, Gravel, possibly water as I can see a ramp being built and attempts made at jumping the small creek next to our house, some asphalt (not much)

I am still leaning towards the Emaxx (brushless) for the big boy (my husband) pros and cons??

The Slash 4 x4 Brushless for myself: pros and cons??? (I don't want to be left behind I got to keep up with the boys - good choice?)

And possibly in the near future the monster jam truck for the little guy (of course in training mode for a little while but I have to give him credit he is pretty good with all of his "toy" rc's)

Geez you think we got the RC bug?

The Momba Moster is an electronic speed control and motor system. You can buy the Revo with either a waterproof brushed system, or the Momba brushless system. Kinda like buying a Mustang, and either going with a v6 or v8.:) It's just an option.

More like a v6 to a twin turbo v12 on NOS.:hehe:

E Maxx cons: A little on the fragile side when being jumped hard. The brushless E Maxx is not water proof.

Pros: Parts are dirt cheap and hop ups are endless.

4x4 Slash cons: none.

From what I have seen, the Moster Jam trucks are 2wd Stampedes. A great rig for a young kid. Again, parts are cheap and hop ups are endless.

That ain't no bull...:)

Revision due to water issue - Thinking, I also want to be able to play in the snow.

Stampede Brushless 4x4???? Then when the little one grows of out of the 2wd we can put the monster truck body (if it survives) on the 4x4 stampede and Daddy gets a new RC of his choice.

Now the 2 battery vs 1 battery, is that just to power the Mamba Monster? Seems like they can pretty much do the same thing. Less the MM. I don't see them going 60 or 65+ mph anytime soon.

Going back to the original post - Stampede/Slash - go figure.

Next ? batteries. There seems to be different types. I am buying extra so what kind?

The 4x4 Stampede and Slash are built on the same platforms. This makes most parts interchangeable and so on. The biggest difference is that the Stampede comes with larger tires. As far as the 2 batteries versus 1, some vehicles require more power due to their size. The E Revo and E Maxx are larger and heavier than the Slash and pede, so they require more power. However, this doesn't mean that the bigger vehicles are faster. As far as batteries go, I think you guys would be perfectly happy running nimh batteries. Intellect, Tenergy and Duratrax are all brands of batteries that I have used and have had great results with. All of these brands of batteries come with the Traxxas connectors already installed. You just have to make sure when you purchase them that you buy the ones with the proper connectors.:) I'm using a charger that has been long discontinued, so I don't have much advice on new chargers other than to buy a quality one the first time.:) Others will chime in. When purchasing batteries, I recommend going with 3800mah+. The mah rating is essentially the "gas tank", or how much juice the battery holds. The higher the mah rating, the longer the run times.

There are lipo, nimh, nicd, and life. The easiest to maintain are the nimh as nicd wont do a thing for the rigs. I would not go lower than 4000mah for decent run times. lipo is the best performance wise, but takes a little caring when charging/balancing, but will see twice the speeds of nimh.

I find LiPo batts far easier to maintain than NiMh.

Nevertheless, beginners to electric RC should learn to crawl first so NiMh is best for them.

I disagree. The power and run time of LiPo batteries will greatly enhance your overall enjoyment of your new r/c. And since you're having to learn it all anyway, might as well start with the best. If you shop around,Lipo batteries are not much more expensive than NiMh and neither is a charger.

Other than a little less ground clearance than a monster truck,IMO the Slash 4x4 is one of the best rigs to start with.

I was thinking along the lines of when they get to the point of making gearing changes and running different/larger tires. It'd be easy to over draw lipos on accident because of lack of experience and have some heavy duty consequences follow.
