Yes you can race with a 3 speed.
I still don't see spending big bucks on a savage to get it to race with the 3 speed, the 3 speed will be more of a pain then anything when racing. shift points and all that stuff. I think that it can be done, but I just can't justify the time or the money.
He wants to buy a new rig and if he is going to race I have to say I would not invest in another savage, I would go with the revo. add $100 to a box stock 3.3 revo and it will do circles around a savage with a 3 speed.
I agree, and I have what I consider a "close-to-race-ready" Savage (Wasp .28, 3-speed tranny, THS pipe, 4-spider diffs with HD cups, etc.) and a "race ready" Revo (OS .18TM, FOC, close-ratio gearing, RPM arms, CVEC pipe, etc.) and I know my Revo will beat my Savage in a true 'round the track race 8 times out of 10. Don't get me wrong, I love that Savage, man, and I am brutal on that thing, but for lack of a better term, it's just not 'elegant' on a track. It's more like a bull in a china shop.
I think what's important to keep in mind is that the term "race ready" is a subjective term. I think if you polled those that race regularly (and I am just getting into racing, mind you) they would argue that the Revo 3.3, even stock, IN THEIR OPINION would not be considered "race ready". It can be argued that it takes less effort to make it race ready than it would a stocker Savage.
Now, if I lined up both my Revo and Savage in a straight drag race, same tires, I think the Savage will take the Revo (at least MY Savage would take MY Revo).
Again, I do not think anyone argues that the Savage can be made into a racer, because I think it can be, but if you gave me the same amount of money to invest in each and make them a racer, I think the Revo can be made the better racer of the two.
