Been looking around for a TV to buy for myself for christmas, and have found two that I like (especially the price). What yall think?

First one is a 42" Vizio Razor LED LCD 1080p 120Hz HDTV

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod1260337&navAction=push

Second one is a 40" Philips LCD 1080p 240Hz HDTV

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod1113779&navAction=push

One is a LED LCD, and the other is just LCD. Also, what are the differences in the 120Hz and the 240Hz? Any help is appreciated. Keep in mind I'm comming from a 60" 720 DLP projector tv from the late 90's.

The LED LCD HDTV's are thinner, lighter and more energy efficient than their Fluorescent backlit LCD counterparts. The 240 Hz vs 120 Hz is the refresh rate. IMO anything over 60 Hz doesn't really "flicker" to the human eye. Supposedly the higher the refresh the better.

Personally I would get the Vizio. I've got 2 of them (both LCD 1080p and 120 Hz) myself and really like them.

I was looking at a Vizio at Costco but I read the reviews of it on their website and it has ALOT of negative reviews from people saying it basically died really fast. And honestly, when I was loading my new tv in the truck at Costco, a girl parked next to us and took a vizio out of her car to return because she said it stopped working after about 2 weeks of use.

Heres a few of the reviews.

"initially i was pleased with the visio 42 inch tv. but two months after the warrenty was up the tv picture went blank. to fix it the cost will be $85 diagnostic fee, $20-$120 for parts and another $85 to install parts. this total amount worst case is $320 and least amount is $200. do not buy this piece of junk. you will waste your money. i am sorry i recommended it to friends. hope this review helps somone else. Visio contracts out repairs and takes about a week to get anything fixed. guess you get what you pay for."

"vizios tends to have power supply issue after 2 years. My second vizio is giving me power supply issue, and first one had the same issue too after it was out of warranty. I fixed it myself as it was easy to fix. if your vizio has the same issues, open it up look at the power supply, there should be some busted capacitors on the board. Order them on digikey and solder them on the board."

"I am returning this unit. I will probably get another. This is my second Visio and was happy with my last one.
The 2 HDMI ports on the back do not work. The picture is super bright and clear with the factory settings. I will play with the new one to get a more natural looking color.
There is also a "fuzz" line that appears at the top of the screen sometimes. I dont know if this is a Dish issue or the tv. I didnt have a problem in the past.
Customer service was helpful and willing to send someone out free of charge but I will be utilizing the Costco return policy (the reason I bought at Costco in the first place) to hopefully avoid a complete lemon."

"My VIZIO failed just a month out of the 1-yr warranty window and I called VIZIO directly in hopes of getting some help with troubleshooting and repair. They did try to help me source the problem but refused to do anything else accept give me a toll-free number to a national repair service that does not cover my area. Basically, they tried to make my problem with VIZIO, someone else's problem. I called back and a customer service rep yelled at me and refused to let me speak with a manager. I work in CS myself and was tactful and careful not to raise my voice despite being treated so disrespectfully. My VIZIO failed after 1-yr, then cost me $200 to fix. Spare yourself the expense and buy a better TV!"

I have that 42" Vizio, got it at Sam's Club. I highly recommend it.
Going from 120Hz to 240 doubles the refresh rate which smooths the motion in high speed scenes.
You'll notice the cheap TVs have 60Hz, the good ones are 120, and the costly ones are 240.

Keep in mind that Vizio sells more TVs than any other company in the WORLD. You're bound to find a few problems, and those are the people that post.

It was instore pickup discontinued price. Just called to get it. they sold the LAST one in the state, and are not getting any more... so pissed.......

I've had my 42 inch hd vizio for two years now. and absolutley love it! i WILL NOT go back to standard defination, and no one here or anywhere else can make me!! lol. for the price i paid for mine, i couldnt justify any other tv brand. i gave right at 900 for mine after tax and my buddy bought a 46 inch phillips and gave like 1600 for it, the picture quality is not any better than mine, and doesn't have the sound output mine does so he has to use a surround sound system just to hear it. i brag to him all the time about the vizio brand. you just can't go wrong.

That's the reason for the price difference. Mine isn't the Razer, but has all the same features, plus 4 HDMI inputs, Optical audio input, thumb drive USB input for your own photo slide shows and computer input.
If you wait till after Christmas, the price might drop. I heard they had dropped it 100 bucks a few weeks ago.

Plasma is sharp, but will go the way of the 8-track. It runs hot and will require a $200 bulb every few years.
The Panasonic Plasma 50" was recently named best buy at about 800, but I'd still go with the LCD-LED.

Another $50 and you have the Vizio. A TV is good for about 10-12 years. $50 spread over that time is less than $4 a year.
Not a fan of Hitachi, Sharp I like.
Other than the screen, Vizio is the ONLY American made TV in the world.
That's why I bought it. That's also the reason I wear New Balance shoes.
That's why I despise Wal*Mart.

  • 120Hz refresh rate
  • Full HD 1080p resolution
  • Edge lit LED
  • 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
That's the Sharp Aquos. That's some serious black and white contrast. Sharp makes good TVs at a great price.
I've had several Sharp products in the past, including a 25" TV that lasted for 10 years before I got a bigger one and gave it away.

I've heard pretty good things about hitachi. The sharp looks pretty good, and has really good reviews as does the hitachi. The vizio was made in china as was the hitachi. The vizio does not really have good reviews at all.......

EVERY TV flat screen is made in China, most by the same company that makes the Vizio screens. If I had seen the Sharp Aquos 42" in Sam's club, I probably would have gotten that one, instead.
