I have always wanted to get an Associated buggy chassis since my RC10T3, I now have one! (Well, two actually).

I can't race the Associated 40th anniversary buggy, that'll be a shelfer and a later build thread ;). In the meantime, I decided to purchase an LT10SW short course truck chassis and convert it to a buggy. I found the chassis on eBay, in really good condition.

I'll need to inspect it and rebuild it. For now, just been working on some test fitments on parts, slowly working on teardown.

I removed all the silly short course bumpers. Ignore those wheels, those were just for fun :)

Already looks a lot better!

Testing fit of new wheels I bought. I like the look so far. I probably can't race with spoked wheels, so I'll be looking for dished wheels too.

I just got some new body mounts and shock towers for the buggy conversion.

Next steps are to tear down the chassis and inspect all screws, linkages and drivetrain; then I'll build it back up 😎. I'll update as I tear this thing down.

Interesting. I'll delete and re-add the pics, maybe that'll fix it.

UPDATE: added photos again. So hopefully the thread is fixed :)
I can SEE!!! 😁

Your SCT is missing stuff.
Just sayin'! 🤣

I hope it looks as good once you start disassembly. Its a good looking buggy!
I like those tires and wheels too!

Nice score on the UN-SCT!!! 😎👍

The teardown will reveal the real issues (if any). Kind of want to play with the shocks next, cuz shocks are fun 😊

If nothing else, they are mesy. 🤣
Any signs of leaking orings...?

As I mentioned, my last set of shocks felt terrible when I started. Now, they are exactly as I'd hoped. 😎

VERY SATISFYING JOB!!! 😁 👍

I'll have to get into the shocks. They are dry, so I'm hoping the o-rings are in good condition when I open up the shock bodies. But ya, nothing like a smooth functioning shock 🤩

I've got family in town, but it can't keep me away from a little rc work. I've got the front taken apart. So far only one tripped screw on this front plate.

The shock springs look pretty good. I ordered some additional ones just in case.

Shocks are looking in good shape. I'll be rebuilding them next. The plan is to move these front shocks to the rear and I've got new shocks coming for the front.
I studied both the SCT and buggy assembly manuals and looks like the SCT had longer rear shocks than the buggy, so a quick shock rotation should do it. Also saves money, so double win.

Still need to test the servo, but stoked it's a Reedy. I will run it until I break it.
1000016967.webp

I'm doing a modular disassembly/reassembly in hopes I don't get parts confused. Chances are high I may not put something together right with the mess I created. And rc puzzle just adds to the fun! 😆

Where did I leave off? Oh yes. The front was disassembled. Well, today I got back to work and reinstalled the front suspension with the new buggy shock tower.

Got some titanium shock shafts, cuz why not?
1000017416.webp

Front shocks are assembled. I just need to remove the shock eyelets from the old rear shocks for the front. For my switch from SCT to buggy, I'm taking the old front (SCT) shocks and moving them to the rear. Then these new ones will be mounted to the front.

Tomorrow's plan is to breakdown the rear, clean and inspect; then reassemble...

Short course buggies are a thing too. That blue is purdy, and I'm not a blue guy either.
This is a nice blue, happy with it so far 🤩💙

I'd like to get into buying colored hop-ups, but it's hard to justify when everything works as intended. ;)

Looks like an awesome project and you’re getting work done! It’s an excellent platform for having fun but racing also. It’s based on very successful race kits after all.

Big progress today! Tore down the rear suspension, inspected, lubricated gears. Reinstalled everything. I short-cutted checking the front turnbuckle lengths and of course that came around to bite me. So, I had to fiddle with that, when I should have been done. Much improved now, and hoping steering trim will do the rest.

Removing the rear shocks tower, turnbuckles.
1000017427.webp

Greasy bottom to the gear box.
1000017431.webp

Laid out all the slipper parts and covers so I knew to reinstall correctly.
1000017433.webp

Gears all looked in good condition. I used my mobil 1 grease from the rally car to lubricate the gears. Not sure if that was a bad idea since these are mainly nylon gears over metal, but I'll find out eventually.
1000017434.webp

Reinstalled gearbox and slipper gear. Added the mounts for buggy wing.
1000017436.webp

New rear shocks with the ti gold shafts.
1000017444.webp

The ride height is so good now!
1000017440.webp

Liking the stance. There's apparently a bumper plate for the front I can order. That was an oversight, but not sure if I need it.
I think steering trim will straighten my wheels better, if not, I'll work on the turnbuckles more.
1000017441.webp

I misplaced the dust cap for the motor cover 🙄.
Hopefully I'll be able to find that somewhere.
1000017443.webp

Now I'm at the point I can play with the electronics install. I got some soldering to do there once I get the motor installed and figure out placement for the ESC.

I guess I should order that Leadfinger body soon! I really do hope one of those will fit this thing.

Good job. I see you found at least one of Associated's hide and go seek items...

LOL. Every single Associated ride I have/or had... there's always at least one spot that the tolerances are off for those tiny button heads to effectively do their job of securing the hinge pins. 🤷‍♂️
