My new 9.5V and a few questions... suspension and diffs

Hey guys, hopefully I've found a decent 1/8th forum here. Looks pretty good so far.

Here's my first 1/8th scale buggy, a Ofna 9.5 Violator

So far, here's the mods:
Linkages
Aluminum servo horns
Blue silicone stuff
F & R CVD's (Fronts are stock)
BB idler steering post
Futaba S3305 steering servo

Too many future plans to list:thumbup:

So I'm just a basher... a semi-coverted monster truck owner, I'm looking for a good stiff suspension setup for jumping and general use. I'm thinking Ofna white springs and 40-45wt oil... does that sound about right?

Diff fluid - I've got 5k and 10k. What should go where? I'm looking for a nice tight LSD action, with some slight power-on oversteer. Pretty sure I'll be using 10k in the center, but since I'm not familiar with how these handle, some help is needed.

Looks like quite a nice buggy you got yourself there. How is the power out of that bad boy??? I see you have a little dirt on it I am guessing you had a little time to bash it.

Thanks guys:w00t: about 15 mintes and 2 replies already... it's been 3 days an no replies on the Ofna board:depress:

I'm just about done breaking it in. I had about 5 tanks into it and had to start to tune it a bit... it was only at 130*F and running really well, so I leaned her out about 1/4, still kepping it under 200-220*F... It really woke up, can't wait to get some more fuel through it to see it really go...

LOL just wait till the real buggy buffs get in here to answer your questions. They will be up in a couple of hours. Yeah 130 probably isn't warm enough at all for break in. I think you want to be at around 190 at least. Newayz you will get lots of great advice here trust me I have.

I run 5-7-1 (F to R) and plan to bump things up a bit and go to a
7-10-3 setup. I've never heard anyone use the 10-10-5 setup but it looks like it'll hook up nice. Your suspension choices of springs and oil are in the ballpark. When it comes to suspension setups is got alot to do with driving style and good old fashioned trail and error. What you are suggesting is a good place to start. I run mugen shocks, blue springs, 30 wt in the F and 40 wt in the R. Good looking ride though, (all except your filter - MotorSaver all the way !!). Really man, it looks great.

I'm running 3k-7k-1k in mine and IMO I need more on-power steering. Off power is good, but I'd like more on-power.
To do this, I'd need to thicken up the rear diff oil, right?

Just ordered some white springs... I think I'll try 40wt front and 45/50wt rear just to start out...

My steering was horribly binding up on me... my S3305 couldn't even turn the wheels. Narrowed the problem down to those stupid bushings on the drag link, so I also ordered the 9.5 CNC link w/bearings

Maybe it's a problem with the Violator. My friend has the same problem with his. The stock steering servo wouldn't even turn the wheels to the left (or right? I forget.) It seems crazy that they'd let something out of the factory that won't even turn it's own wheels!

Once he upgraded the steering servo it wasn't an issue anymore but I'm betting the problem is still there, it'll end up killing his battery and servo life if it's binding. I'll recommend your choice of steering hopups to him!

From what I've seen the Violator is a nice machine. I like how they give you the option of cutting the suspension arms to make it "legal width." Pretty sure you can also bolt in a standard ofna gas tank on there, and once you replace the engine you're fully compliant. But as you said, you just bash, so it's not an issue anyways!

Hey MilitaryMaxx, I see a lot of folks running Mugen shocks, are they really good? Think there's a good reason to upgrade my Storm RTR shocks with the Mugens over the Storm Pro ones?

I did some searching, looks like duratrax makes some 8x4mm flanged bearings that might work, but no idea for sure, they are about $4 for a 2 pack, but the upgraded link and bearings is only $12 at nitrohouse. I also replaced the plastic bushings in the idler side with bearings, which made a huge difference too. The stock steering servo is just a standard servo, I beloeve it's the same as a Futaba S3003, which can't do poop. I like the high torque MG futaba so far...
