Ok, so I'm running a Mac most of the time, but I use MS IE 5.2 (mac) most of the time. I'm online surfing around, no problems, close IE to work on something else and when I bring it back up all my favorites are gone. Well, everything except two folders and a link to Apple. Care to guess what the two folders are? 1) Microsoft Web Sites, and 2) MSN Web Sites. WTF? I didn't have that many sites booked, but it really pisses me off that IE just up and decided "I'm gonna piss off the user", poof no more favorites.

Luckily I had the same favorites on Apple's browser "Safari". This is in no way an "Apple is better than MS" thread, but it really pisses me off about crap code. And before anyone asks, no I didn't delete some favorites folder, they just disappeared.

Sometimes wouldn't you like to take a fiddlesticking hammer to these things. Good luck Error.

Yup, microsoft can really get a guy going. What I really like is network settings just dissapearing.
When my folks had win98 for a home network it seemed like I was over thereonce or twice a mont re-doing network settings. Like you Error, they would just dissapear.

I'm like "ok, where did you click" their like "We woke up this morning and it just didn't work" I wouldn't belive them if it didn't just spontaneously quit working in front of me.

What I reallly like, is removing 5-10 different programs that self install from web pages. Now that's my favorite. Anyone care for a little :spam:

Like you, I'm not out trying to bash MS. I'm just tired ofthings not working like they are supposed to.

Microsoft problems and people not knowing how to deal with them is what keeps me in buisness... Thanks guys LOL :jk:

I know what ya mean Msly. MCP here.

Lykan brought up a good point. Last night I was over at my cousins house trying to get their XP Pro PC hooked up to a cable modem. I took my laptop and my couusin had brought one home from work. I hooked up a loaner FW and both laptops got all they needed from it and were instantly on the internet. The desktop however ketp getting 0.0.0.0 as an IP and ipconfig /renew resulted in an error message stating that a file was missing (sure, you could release all day long w/ no error). It was only when I added a new user (instead of logging in as administrator) and trying to put that user into the admin group that XP said that the Workstation service was not running. Hmmm. Go to manage computer, services. Lo and behold, the server service, workstation service, DHCP, DNS and a couple other services were not running. Down the list I went starting them back up. Ok they're running and all is well with the world. Go back to network interface properties and set the IP and DNS back to automatic, restart message comes up. Ok, sure, whatever, reboot. It comes back up and guess what the IP is.... 0.0.0.0 WTF? Back to the services and all the ones set on auto that I had started were dead. Piss. Down the list again, but set the individual properties to restart the service on all errors (force the fuk'r to restart them). Reboot, same thing, none had started, but the properties said to restart on all errors. Go to view the event log, and here's the truely hilarious thing, no errors in either the system log or the application log. Right about then I'm thinking "screw MS", hard and with greatt frequency. Ok, the internet worked when I static numbered the IP. So I set that and borrow a DNS setting from my ISP. Reboot again (I thought XP was better about reboots). Log into the router, get the DNS info for their connection, set that in their system, and reboot again. Ok, band-aid installed. that OS install is on it's last leg, so they were happy to at least be able to use the system and surf on their new cable hookup.

Screw MS. It's not just a job, it's a hair loss program.

MSLY kinda hit it right.

To me it's not that people don't know how to run computers that keep me in r/c goodies lol.

It's the built in defects, and me knowing ways around them that keep me working.

The only reason I am succesfull with computers is I am curious, stubborn and relentless. That and I am a click a holic.

If I have learned one thing with windows. The faster you click the faster you fix it heh.

What I love, really love is walking up to a computer thats "broken" and do 3 clicks, it's fixed. My customer's like "that was it?", I'm like "A-yup". What they don't realize is that it took me 3 days of clicking to figure out how to do it.

LMAO, dude, you crack me up.

Latest round-n-round with MS: setting up an ftp server and dealing with ISP filters and port forwards on an MS gateway.

The list goes on.

Whats is this Microsoft thing you're speaking off?

bash-2.05b$ uname -rs
FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE

Oh, gonna bring the Nix into the mix, eh?

Here's a little story on that one too. So, I'm displeased with MS, and am running OS X and figure I want to dabble with Linux to get a feel for that too. I install Red Hat 9 an a machine and start playing around with it. Looks good, feels good, but is a tad slow in booting programs. No problem, I can live with that, and BTW this was on a 1.6 P4 with 256 DDR. Checkin out the ftp server feature and find out that the stock one is nearly crippled in configuration options. Off to the net I got and find a decent looking ftp program. Cool, it "easy to setup and configure" and is aimed at noobs, and has everything I want it to do. I download it, unzip it and start to follow the install directions. Then things go downhill from there. The configure script flashes up and disappears, hmmm, bring up the terminal and rerun it. This time it says there's no C compiler in the path. A short time later it dawns on me to check the install disk for packages that aren't installed, voila, there's the compiler. Back to the configure script, this time it works. Now to makefile, it gyrates, does some stuff and poof it's done. Can't tell what it's done so I assume that it worked ok. You'd expect that makefile would make something that you can look at. Anyway, back to the install instructions, scroll scroll, ok, step 4: playing witht he config file. Hmm, ok, go find that and decide to just test it with the defauts first. Step 5: installing it to load on boot (because I have no idea where you can load it otherwise). I'm starting to think that this is like three midgets trying to give an elephant a handjob without a step ladder. By now it's nearing the wee hours of the morning and I can hear Uncle Bill whispering from Redmond.... The freakin instructions for this thing totally crap out on step 5. It was so detailed on the rest, but on step 5 it just said "ok, install it to load on startup". WTF, like every noob knows exactly how to do that. Lying propeganda on their website. That's about the time I started thinking "I wonder what other Linux distros look like".

This is whre it gets creepy. I find Mandrake 9.1 and start the install on an old Dell 450. The install goes rather well, like most new linux installs go. I get it booted up, check out the features but the ftp server feature I explicitly installed is nowhere to be found. At least RH9 had some info on it, but not M9.1. Well, I went to shut down and it did it's thing, and finally said to power off (it didn't so I held the power button until it did). I go back over to the Mac to check up on RCNT and about 5 minutes later I hear my other monitor power on. I look over and the Dell with mandrake is booting all by itself. I never install the Wake on Lan feature on my systems and the thing was stone cold off when I left it. WTF? I let it boot and it goes all the way to the desktop(s) without asking for a login name or p/w. I knew Linux was stable and like to run, but this was rediculous. I send it to shutdown, it goes through the same routine, but this time I yank the power cord. "OK you begger, let's see ya try that trick again" I think as I head off to bed.

I like Linux, and OS X, and Windows (when I want to game). They all have their plusses and minuses, I just wish they would work as advertized more often than not.

Hmm.. i have to admit i've never experienced this type of problems. But then, i started using Linux about 10 years ago and there was not really an easy way to install it back then. You just had to RTFM and dive into it.
Yes, Linux has come a long way, and it might look like its not as easy to handle as Windoze for the newbie, but once you understand how it works, it is much better and easier to use and maintain than windoze.

Oh, and i love the Apple now. I only bought a PowerMac because it had the Unix tools that come with OS X. This is a fantastic operating system!
