I always read that if you have metal sper gears on your truck that you will not be replacing plastic gears put tranny gears tranny.
Well what if you don't have a tranny?
Will it break something else?

Differentials and center axles take a lot of punishment if there isn't something to give in the driveline.

What vehicle?

Buggies and truggies run center diffs. This allows power to transfer to front and rear, depending on which has less grip (unless you have a torsen center diff). That's why they don't have problems running steel spurs without any type of slipper mechanism.

i always prefer plastic but if you already have the steel then you might as well use it.

just loosen up the nut that holds the spur on. Should be all the way tight and then a 1/4 or at the most, a 1/2 turn back off. Just play with it till you achieve the desired "slip"

You don't want it to slip every time you nail it from a standstill but you do want it to slip if you have the drivetrain in a bind to prevent something else from breaking.

If you loosen it up and your takeoff speed drops alot then its too loose. You really just have to play with it honestly.

understand?
