Hello,

My son drives the MBX5R buggy. The set screws that secure the front and rear drive shafts to the diffs, keep backing out (ever so slightly). Yesterday, 17 minutes into the 20 minute A-Main at SVM Speedway in Sun Valley, my son had a 1 and a half lap lead on the field. The front set screw backed out, and he lost front wheel drive. He finished the race at half-speed, finishing 5th.

We had this problem in the past, so we went from using blue threadlock to red, and thought we had solved the problem. Wrong.

We use the new modified Ninja motor, and I am speculating that the extreme RPM that this motor puts out is contributing to this problem with the set screws. We never had this problem while using stock V-Spec, Nova Rossi, or even the original Ninja motors.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Hello, I like to apply threadlock to the set screw and then tighten till snug. After I put some Heatshrink tubing around the body of it. It will help to keep the Set screw from backing out.

I read in XRC doing that to MIP CVD's Great idea. I have been using that idea for a couple of years now. Ever since I had an MGT, I learned my lesson.

Sorry to hear about the loss. Sounds like you have an up and coming racer in your son!!

I've been running a 5R for about 6 months or so now and haven't had one back out yet. One of my mills is a RB Mods Ninja as well. From what you can tell, are the set screws actually backing out and losing the pin OR is the set screw possibly too tight and causing the pin to shear in the middle. I use blue loctite only and when I lube the drives I use Pedro's chain lube. The boots don't work with the outdrives cause of the axle carrier, they rub. They do work good though on the center shafts. BTW, I did lose one on my 5T but it was shortly after I did some maintenance and think I forgot to loctite it.

make sure you the set screw and threads well before applying threadlock.
