Guys,

I leave myself wide open for ridicule and smart comments... but I will say it anyway. I am 30 years old and because I couldn't place high enough on my college math entrance exam, I have to take two remedial math classes for no credit, just so I can get to the freshman level math class I do need. The math class I am in is called Math 800 and it starts out with Addition and Subtraction. I got that ok. Then it moved into Multiplication and Division. Something I thought would be a breeze as well and I have all of a sudden hit a road block. I can't remember my times tables past anything X 6. I can't even remember how to properly do long division. Man do I feel stupid. I have a successful career, a wonderful family, a roof over my head... I feel like I am a pretty successful guy.... until you put 35/5436 if front of me. First of all, I haven't had any type of math since 1994.. my junior year of High School.... but I still feel stupid just because I have to take the class in the first place. I am sure I can pick this stuff up and I will get through this... but even my 5 year old knows more math than I do! LOL My wife... is very supportive however. I am extreamly lucky for that. She got her PhD in Physical Chemestry so she has a huge math background. She has offered to help, but I am to damn embarassed to even ask her.

Well I am sorry for dumping in here guys. Take care.

Tom

If you don't use it, you lose it. That saying goes for most everything. And I bet math high on that list. I have taken a lot of math including mind-numbing crap like calculus and statistics and I can't tell you one thing about them. To this day, when I read a research paper, my mind goes foggy when I reach the analysis portion. So don't sweat it. Just the way our brains work.
And don't be too embarrassed to ask for help. Only when you realize your limits can you begin to exceed them. So just suck it up and ask your wife for help.

Yeah... I suppose your right. If it is not something that you use everyday it is gone very quickly. I guess since I make a living working in IT, it is sort of expected that Math is a strong. It just insn't the case. The closest thing I have to math in my line of work is subnetting.... and even that has a table that I can look up on to figure out what IP stack I need to use. Thanks for the advice my friend.

You have only two things in life you can spend, Time and money. Use both of them wisely. They are one and the same so take your choice.

See if you can take the placement tests again for next semester. In the meantime, spend the time and a few dollars on some tutoring. There are several great places to go that will get you back in the groove in no time. Tottering Club and Kumond are are two that come to mind as well as my favorite option of finding a fresh little 21 year old blond topless touter from the strip club I'm sorry, the collage to help you out.

Nothing wrong with gettinh help.

Ed, I think I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one because you can never make time up. Once its gone its gone, but money you can lose it and make it back. I would have to agree to make money you need time, but you don't need time to make money. I do agree with you on the fact that they are both important and for the most part the coinside with each other, but I think Time is your most valuable asset, so use it wisely. Just my 2 cents.

Also, I was just wondering why you needed to take these classes anyways. Are you back in school? Job just asked you to brush up on things. What? Just curious.

there was some study about taking penis enhancers, and viagra that did some effect on the brain that you forget how to do mulitiplications...this could be the problem??

I am working on my B.S. Degree. It is something that I have been working on part time for a few years now. Not so much for my job, but for me. It is just something I need to do.

I sucked at math, which is precisely why I am in sales. Fair warning to everyone out there!

In my best Carlos Mancia voice...."Dis class is sooooo easy!!!!!" Dee Duh Dee
Sorry Tom, couldn't resist. Now Monkey on the other hand, you sure it's just math you sucked at? I guess though it would explain why you were asking me to keep score for you while you were dinging the scoring pylons at the track!!! LOL

It's all good jet..... I leave myself wide open!

Hey Nothing to be embarassed about. At least you are trying to further your education. You should be happy. That way you can get a refresher course before you go into the hard stuff. It's always nice to get re educated. Jeez I ave forgotten half of the stuff I learned. Would do me some good to get re educated. Keep the head up and be proud about what your doing.

Hey Thanks Big D.... That is the way I am looking at it... I have to... or I would quit now! LOL

I guess this thread gave you a head ache....

LOL J/K!!! Tom I know what you are going through brother. I am about to go back to get my degree in M.E. and I know the classes will make my head spin. It's all good though, in the end we will both be smarter...asses! Good luck bro.

Man you got me thinking here. I have been thinking about taking some night school classes. History has always interested me.

Dude I think it's great that you're going back in school. Just get through it, now matter how long it takes. I bet it will be worth it.
About the math, I so know what you mean. I would be lost without my pocket calculator. Now if I only knew how to use it. That's what you get for taking a non academic education. I'm lazy and lack the self discipline to make it through university. :D

Ok. That's sweet. It takes a lot of balls to do that. It's definetly not an easy thing to do after you been working a while. Good luck to you.

Now Monkey on the other hand, you sure it's just math you sucked at?

Oh no, it was one of a few things I sucked at, brother! Did good in my philosophy classes, along with English and few others. Problem is, no one wants to pay me for sharing grammatically correct deep thoughts!

Not that good at math either. Used to be able to figure simple stuff in my head. Anymore if I don't have a calculator, I'm screwed. Maybe just too many lost brain cells in the '70's.....

Really liking the idea of that topless tutor though. Just not sure yet how that will help your math.
But if you can figure out how to get it by your 'ol lady, let me know. I would be willing to take a few lessons myself.

Nothing to be embarrassed about. It'll all come back to you.
Best of luck with getting your degree.

Don't feel bad bro, after many years of having to write everything in print I had a very hard time writing in cursive again...Now thats bad!

Stick with it man, it will all come back to you.

Actually Sweet D it did...... I had to get some help.... but my rigs will run a bit better because of it. Good luck with your degree as well my friend. Although it is hard and I complain alot.... I know deep down it is worth it.

Thanks for all the well wishes as well gentleman.... I will get through this just like anything else life throws your way. Although I don't recomend getting a degree the way I am... it is the path I chose. Working full time definitely makes it harder. Anyway.... thanks to all for listening and offering words of incouragement... it helps alot. take care guys.

Tom

I, too, am going back to finish my degree this fall. and have been working on my bachelor's for a while now, off and on. I know what you're going through.

Right now I am teaching an IT class at a technical school. I keep having to remind my students that the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. The other thing I tell them is that I am not a mind reader, you need to ask me for help.

Good look and study hard!
