Ok, posting this from my phone, which is a cricket phone... So this is pretty impressive. If all else fails i could do this from now on, lol. So i have an hp dv6000 laptop. Tried to bring it back from sleep mode and i was unsuccessful. I shut it off and tried to reboot, and it would turn on, and then shut off. The hard drive would spin a little and then go dead, and the laptop shuts itself off then turn back on, then repeat. I have a feeling that the hard drive may be shot. Am i correct?

Pull the hard drive. If it tries to boot but says something about missing drive or (Operating System Not Found) then it is the hard drive. It sounds like a power issue though.

I have also seen a stuck key give the same problem. Its almost impossible to tell on a laptop keyboard.

I would think it is either the power or a hard drive. I have had problems with HP power jacks and supplies. You may want to check if the power is getting to the laptop by seeing if there is a blue light around the power socket. If it's blue then there is power to the laptop and that should be enough to boot up. If you can to the boot splash screen with the HP logo, try to get into the setup by hitting the "del" key until it goes into the setup. Check to see if the hard drive is being recognized in the bios setup. If it isn't, you will need to buy a new SATA laptop drive. A new 500GB is running about $120 or less.

If you have a restore disk, try booting to it before trying the setup. it might also be an easy way to see if it is more than just a hard drive.

Well I've tried everything you guys have suggested, and still no luck.. I'm thinking about just throwing it up in the air and firing a couple of rounds with the shotgun at it

When did you buy it?

Apparently they sold some in mid 07 with bad mother boards.

when you turn it on start hitting F8 over and over. you should get a menu, with the option to "turn off reboot on system failure" try that and see if you are getting a blue screen. the new machines will error and reboot before the blue screen ever comes up.

Dose the HP splash screen come up when you try to start it?

If it dose use your windows disk and do a system repair.

If i remember correctly you should use these commands: chkdsk, fixboot, and fixmbr.

I always do a second fixboot and fixmbr, just for good measure.

So i called hp yesterday after finding out that my laptop has a major bug that most of these models have. They claim it as a warranty repair. Guess what; mine ran out last month! So now they want 260 bucks to fix it. I call a scam on this one. If it is such a common problem it should be a recall. I've tried everything and can't figure it out. I'm going to take it to a local guy and let him have at it. Screw hp. Thanks for the help guys
