Just ran the first tank through my CRT

How many tanks should I run like that? Should I run the entire break in period like that before I start messing with the needles? Also do I gradually work toward full throttle during each successive tank? So far this seems to be a very simple way to break in a mill. I like it. It alows me to actuall start off driving the truck. Thanks for all the help.

I usually do a few tanks at 1/4-1/3 then a couple 1/3-2/3 then a couple 1/2- full then you should be ready to go. Just keep in mind that you may need to lean your needles as you go because the more fuel the mill sees it will tend to cool off and run richer.

I just noticed that... what does that mean exactly? I saw that I have like insaine amounts of space in my PM box.

I just found that out with my savage. I got it to 200 for a while, then the next time I ran it it was like 110, 120... I checked my temp gun and it was fine the cooling head was lukewarm. I figure this might explain my stalling.

Thanks for the link my friend. I will check it out. I hope it gets warm enough outsided for to try and run a few more tanks through it.

Tom

Alright guys,

I think I am going to go out today and run a few more tanks through this puppy. Just before I do, I just want to make sure I have this right. First I will run like 2 tanks at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle and then let it cool betweein tanks at BDC. Then run 2 tanks at 1/3 to 1/2 throttle and let cool between tanks at BDC. Then run 2 tanks at 1/2 to full throttle letting it cool between tanks at BDC. Then after that I can start tuning for performance? I just want to make sure I have it before I go out. Thanks guys.

that's what you need for a proper breakin....don't forget to pull the piston down whenever it shuts off....Not just for breakin either...forever

Hey Plaid... When you say I should go to BDC when it shuts off, do you mean that I should put the piston at BDC and let cool, even if I am in the middle of a tank of fuel? I just want to be sure I understand this. Thanks man.

Hey Guys,

Well I just ran another tank through it. I ran it in circles and figure 8's at about 1/3 throttle. I held the throttle just long enough to get the truck moving and then I would let go of the trigger. Then I would repeat the process again. It only cut out a couple of times, I just started it back up and was back to it. This time I got the temps up to between 218 and 226. Are these temps ok? I ran the truck with the lid off as well. When should I run it with the body on? Thanks

Tom

Those temps aren't too bad, I break in with the body off just because Its easier to change the needle settings if need be.

Cool I will run it again here in a few minutes. I will run it again at just 1/4 to a 1/3 throttle. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks VB

did you know plaidfish was a *stunt double* in brokback mountain, but he refused payment ...he said as far as he was concerned he was "paid in full"

Thanks my friend. That answers one of the questions I have wanted to know the answer to but could not find one. I get so damn nervous during break in. I just don't want to kill the mill before I have a chance to enjoy it. I am getting ready to head out for another tank.

Tom

Ok guys,

Second tank at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle done. I leaned it out about 1 hour and I got my temps to hold steady at about 244... actually between 225 and 244. Is this ok, or too hot? I still had lots of blue smoke. I just ran in a wide circle again. If this is ok, should I go to half throttle for the next tank or stick with 1/3? Thanks

Tom

Thats a bit hot. No big deal, but try to stay under 225. You can start to give more throttle, just keep an eye on your temps.

Ok. so I need to richen just bit? Thanks for the info... It is cool that I can get real time feedback just after a run. It is like having my own pit crew! LOL

Tom

Ok.... Just ran my third tank and 6th overall in the break in of the mill. My temps were still up there though. I richened the mix a bit I would say the temps averaged in the 236 range. I am still working on getting it lower. The mill is cooling as we speak. The mill has that hot smell to it. Not like a burning smell per se, but it smells like it getting warm. Am I hurting the mill? Thanks

Tom

Hey Guys,

Since my temps are still around 236 should I touch the LSN or just keep richening the mixture with the HSN? Thanks guys.

Well, I just got finished running the 4th tank of the day and I am still running on the hot side of 220. I am still around 236 to 242. I am adjusting the HSN slowly and taking a few passes at 1/3 throttle and then temp it again. I guess I will richen the HSN again about an hour and try again the next tank. I am a bit worried about the temps I have been running and wish I could get them down under 220, but I am not having much luck. I am still getting lots of blue smoke so I know I am not running to lean... I will keep on trying until I get it right. It hesitates a bit when I hit the throttle and idles down well. This mill is making it hard to find the sweet spot. If the mill were broke in I would be very happy with the temps. Any suggestions? Just figured I would let you guys know where I am at. Thanks
