It occured to me recently that I really don't enjoy my maxx nearly as much as my savage. At one point in time, I had about 2K sitting in the maxx and it would make it through a weekend with minimal damage. Then I backed off and went back to the 2.5 chassis, then I tried 2wd. 2wd was fun, so I upped it back to the 21 chassis w/2wd and that was fun as well. But even still, after stripping off any unkneeded part and beefing it up in all the weak spots, I still couldn't drive it as hard as I drive my savage. As weeks went by, the maxx got less and less wheel time and the savage just drank through more and more fuel. After getting some of my engine issues on the savage ironed out, I didn't even bother to take the maxx off the shelf.

Now I'm parting it out in the F/S forum and just took the savage out today and had a blast. The only thing that broke was my carb neck loosened up, so I need to flush the engine. But I was sailing that thing over and through everything today for about 2 hours.

How many others have are familiar with this road that I have traveled on?

Just curious.

I havent but all i have is a maxx but i dont get how some of you guys break your maxx's so easely the only bad crash was going 35 in to a cement curb and ripped a tire off . but besides that I have never broken any thing major just plugs and missing screws.I do b flips f flips cartwheels rolls and all at high speeds and never broken any thing I have even jumped off a house a few times.and i hardly land on my tires and its not like i never go racing i do it about 3 times a week and for about 1to 3 hours at a time.

My maxx also was strong as hell. I did alot of upgrades on it, basically just for the extra performance and so on. I have owned a Savage also. When I took it out of the box It made the Tmaxx's construction look very old skool, but I didnt notice a Huge difference between the two in strengths and bashingness. yeah the Savage was quicker, but the motor was alot bigger and it drank quite a bit more fuel than my maxx. Lately I've been getting frustrated with the Rc trucks and such and havnt drove any of my Rc's for a while. And I've even sold a few of them. I just got a dirtbike a few weeks ago so thats been my toy of choice lately. Plus I got a new Gas Heli, I've been messin with also.

Olds,
I here u talk about your maxx alot an say that your savage is tougher and stuff. U got me hooked. I have a NTC3-FTC on they way an if i can get that built before christmas, (which will happen), I am goin 2 go str8 for the Savage SS. Even tho i just hoppen up my Maxx w/ a 21 Conversiom Kit. I'm so intrusted in yours an many others point of very in the subject of "Maxx vs Savage" becaue I wanna have owned both trucks an worked on them and drive them to really tell which is better.

And plus i just like build stuff an the Savage SS is the only monster truck out there in Kit fourm... :smoke:

On my maxx, I broke countless bulkheads and shocktowers and went through a ton of wheel bearings and skid plates. Once I went 21, I obviously went through driveline parts and continued chewing up wheel bearings and shocktowers. But by going 21, I realized that I wanted the brute power of a 21 engine, but I also wanted something I could beat the crap out of and have it drive away smiling. I just couldn't get that with the maxx. A lot of it probably had to do with the fact that I just didn't have the $ to buy the top of the line stuff, like UE diffs, GA bulks, hardcore chassis... it just wasn't worth it.

I started in this hobby about 4 years ago with a xxx-nt, broke a lot of stuff on it as well, but after a bumper and quality diff parts, I only broke the occasional axle carrier and shock tower.

Since I've bought/built the savage from a roller to a basher, I've only broken 1 stock part. I've run over 3 gallons through that truck. I started about 2 weeks after getting it, upgrading the things I saw as weakness's. The shocks changed to buggy shocks, the steering changed to MP steering, the wheels changed to maxx wheels and lunsford turnbuckles. Like I said, since then, 3+ gallons and I've only broken an upright on the rear axle.

I don't care what you say, I've had both and the maxx was definitly more prone to breakage for my driving needs. Am I a good driver, no. Do I race, no. Do I have a ton of $ laying around for this hobby, absolutly not! Do I like a lot of power, fun and reliability, hell yes. And I've found that with my savage.

Like anything in life, there's always someone else's opinion to listen to and there's always fact. I just know for a fact that I broke my maxx often driving it in the same places and the same way I now drive my savage.

You can take a stock Maxx and make it tough as hell for about $250 or even less if you do some looking around for good used parts. GA bulks, UE shock towers, UE chassis braces.

You still need to dump another 300 into to shove in a 21 (conversion and engine), then another 200 for a stronger driveline, then the $250 your talking about to make the chassis stronger, then another $100 on good shocks, then another $50 for RPM arms.

See how that adds up? Even if I didn't buy the $250 parts you talked about, I still spent it on the parts I bought in place of them.

With all that, your at $900 just in hopups then another $400 for the truck.

I have done it like you have 3 times before and I figured out my mistake, you don't need all of that! If you want a .21-.23 they have drop-in's now. Heck you don't even need to buy the Maxx as a whole if you want to be smart about it (I did it this way with my last Maxx). You can buy all the parts/upgrades you need to build it for about $150-$200 more then a RTR would cost you and you would be getting just what you want! Plus you get to put in together and make sure it is done right. I did mine for $625 and it is rock solid!

Why?

I started this thread just to have some sort of discussion now that I've owned both and why I'm glad I got a savage.

LOL...this thread is humorous to me...

Why?

Because I know exactly what he is talking about. I owned both. I had a ton of money dumped into a tank of a T-Maxx. Ask Mr TMaxx from this site...he bought it from me not too long ago. I also owned a Savage (the one Olds is now driving around). I did not dump nearly as much money into the Savage.

Once I purchased the Savage and built it the way I like an MT to fly, the T-maxx only saw nitro to keep the engine fresh. In the end, I got out of MTs for a bit and now own three buggies. Not nearly as offroad as the MTs (as far as ground clearance and go anywhere you want chassis), but they are fast, durable, and fly like an airplane in the right hands.

If I had the money and time back from both Savage and T-Maxx and a choice on how to do it over again...I would have gone with the Savage. BUT of course, hindsight is 20/20...

You guys are depressing me.

That wasn't my intention... not totally anyway.

I wanted 2 things, one, to see how many others "saw the light" so to speak and two, have a thread for people who are new to read so they can see what others have done and what worked for them.

I think the t-maxx is a great truck... as long as you leave it alone and maybe add a rollbar and al front bulks. Upgrading it to a 21 is just a battle from the start. The truck does handle well, it's easy for newbies to get up and running, it has reverse for those who need/want it and there's a ton of info about it.

It just didn't suit my needs and expectations is all.

To me the T-Maxx is just something to play with once in a while. Take it to a construction site, and climb a gravel pile or two, and catch a little air on the end of a new road before they put the curbs in. I've had alot of fun with the Maxx, but anymore it does alot of sitting around. I've tought of selling it, but they are not worth anything. If I did it all over again I'd get a savage (or now a days a LST), but they weren't out yet when I bought my Maxx. At least I didn't know of them.

I owne a max only and i have to say if i could have gone back i would have bought a savage. I'm saying this and dont even have one. Example its in pieces right now as i wright this because i guess i pushed the stock bulks and engine mount to their limits. I do agree with olds though i think it was a good starting truck but once i fix it up and sell it, I'm geting a savage.

the resien i chose the t-maxx over sAvage 21 the t-maxx is faster and it gets more air and it take less fuel to fill it up. and i have to agree i put a alulmium bulk head on the frount are you all T-MAXX HATERS LOL

and there is a lot more aftermarket parts out there for the t-maxx curtis

i love mine i just put on today a profianally body that casted me $50 and some diff rims that i got on a trade i thainks there rpm curtis

I love my savage 21. I bought 2 trucks recently, T-Maxx and a 21. I have only used the 21, but from what I have used it I love it tons. I'm gonna sell the T-Maxx because of the things that I have heard about it (Not necessarily bad things, just things that are better about the savage) even though it is faster than the savage I'm not only in for the speed but for the quality.

I have had 2 t-maxxs and yes they did break alot. Now I have a PCR 7 and a Inferno converted into a truck.I think the conveted buggy is stongest by a longshot.
