Looking for some help / suggestions. My 14 year old has a Rustler VXL and has really taken a big interest in RC racing. I really enjoy spending time with him at the track as his pit crew. Problem is I don’t know anything about what I’m doing.
I think he needs to step up to a 1/8 scale Truggy. He likes the Techno.
How do I know what esc, motor, servo, radio and everything else. Any help would be appropriated.

I would recommend going for a buggy over a truggy. They seem to be more popular and are a bit cheaper. Tekno is a good brand with lots of parts availability. It might also be a good idea to look for a used slider or roller on eBay (a kit with no electronics) over a brand new car if you want to save a bit of money. You will also want to visit your local track to see what kind of tires they're using and get something similar. These are the electronics I have in my Tekno EB48.4

ESC and motor

Most pro ESC's and motors need soldering so if you don't have a soldering iron you'll need one

Servo

Radio and receiver

You will also need a transponder for the track (to keep track of your lap times) this is a good one a lot of people use

(note I'm still pretty new to racing so take everything I say with a grain of salt)

Before you pick up a transponder, find out what your local track uses. as there are several different ones, and none of them, as far as i know, work together, meaning, a MyLaps wont work with an EasyLap, for example. Your best bet, before you go jumping right into a vehicle and electronics, and all the other needed stuff, is to talk to the local racers and see what they are running, and what is and isnt allowed at your local tracks. Most tend to follow a basic rule book, like the one from R.O.A.R., but, there are some that dont.

Thank you

Youtube has lots of videos on this stuff. Try searching for stuff you will be doing and get some popcorn and a beer. Lots to see on YT.

You can easily spend a 1000$ on building truggy racer. I would suggest looking for a used truggy you like. And get a feel for what you want and like. Plus with racing there are rules to each track. So I would find out what they allow and then go from there bud

I personally like Tekin electronics but I'm know trinity is really good too. For a radio Sanwa and Futaba are both good. Servos Id go Hitec or Savox.
