iTunes Help needed...

Hey Guys,

I went to my brother in laws house this weekend to download some songs from itunes since he has a broadband connection. I installed iTunes onto my external HD and took it over and hooked it up to his PC. I downloaded my music and I thought it was saving it to the external drive but when I got home all of the music I downloaded was not there! I wonder if I lost it somehow? Or could it still be on his PC somewhere? I have the reciept for the songs I purchased but no songs. Is it not possible to do what I did? I mean does apple not allow you do download songs and take them with you? Do you have to be logged into the PC where you first installed iTunes and registered your iPod? I am confused and a bit upset at the fact I have $20 worth of tunes I can't seem to locate. Anybody ever have this problem? Thanks guys for any help.

Check your brother's PC. If you did download them right, they have to be somewhere. If you're like me, it's possible you didn't check the download directory correctly and ended up putting them somewhere you can't readily find them. I'd do a search by file type on your external drive to see if they're in a different directory and also have your brother search his PC to see if they ended up on his HD.

Check in your brothers "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" folder. You should find the tracks right there, in folders listed by Artist, then Album. However, be advised that the format iTunes uses by default will lock those tracks to that PC.

You will need to convert them over to .mp3 (in the options area of iTunes), in order to freely copy them (within the limits of the Copyright/Fair Use law, of course) from that hard drive to your external drive, a cd, an iPod, or any other device, and still be able to play them.

Man that is really going to stink if I can't convert them. I would have downloaded them here.... but I have dial-up and didn't want to wait. I hope I can still get them. They were songs my Fiance wanted played at the reception. Oh well if I can't get them... then I guess it would be lesson learned. Thanks for the help guys.

Don't sweat it, Tom. You can convert them. I had to do the same thing for my brother-in-law when he visited. He'd just gotten the iPod for Christmas and was jonesing to get it loaded up, so set it up on my PC, loaded his iPod, then I took all his tunes, converted them to .mp3 and saved them to a thumb drive (because he's an absolute tool when it comes to these things and I know he'd delete the tuned off his iPod). Turns out, he did delete about half the tunes because he's a moron, but got them back off the thumb drive.

If you search Google for .mp3 converters, there's a bunch of shareware out there that will do it for ya!

Thanks MW. I am heading back over there on Friday night to see if I can get my hands on them. I will try and convert them and go from there. Thanks my friend.
