There's a lady nicknamed 'Sammi' who lives in the other building who was facing some really extreme and life changing surgery in the next couple of weeks. Her little timid dog trusted no one, except me. She had asked me to take care of it for about a month, since she would be in the hospital for 2 weeks, and at least another couple of weeks trying to get up and around again. I assured her that I would be more than happy to help.

About 2 hours ago I got a call from her very elderly mother. Sammi was found collapsed in her apartment from an apparent suicide attempt and is now on life support. It doesn't sound good at all.

I've met both her parents several times, and they're well into their 80's. Her father is in very frail health right now and has not been told.

Long story short, her mother and sister asked me to come by since Sammi had asked that her little companion go to me.

I wasn't quite prepared for a permanent obligation, at least not till I'd had a test period, but I now have a new friend relaxing at my feet.
She's got a really big pair of paws to fill after the last guy, but she already seems to fit in nicely.

As far as Sammi goes, I'm felling pretty down right now. I know she dreaded what was coming, but I never knew it would bring her to this.

Pain does things to people. I will pray for her, and for her parents.

You are a good egg, Ralph. Just don't tell anyone I said that...

How about a picture of your new friend?

I'm really not sure what to say other then I am sorry to hear this and I hope she pulls through and gets well soon.
She will be in my prayers!

:(Sorry to hear this Ralph you really are a great guy, my thoughts are with her and her parents. Keep us informed on this man.

Sorry to hear this Ralph, but you are doing a good thing by taking care of her companion, and I am sure Sammi would be happy to know she is in good hands.

I just got a call from Sammi's sister, telling me that she's been taken off the ventilator and is breathing on her own.
Things are looking much better, but there's still a way's to go.
Thanks to all of you for your thoughts.

Good to here she is doing better, and you are a great friend for what you are doing to help out with the dog and all, I hope she continues to improve.

Nice to hear that she is doing better, still going to keep her in our thoughts. Keep us posted.

I'll keep you posted on this, but so far it sounds like she might be released in a few days if there wasn't any brain damage. We're all hoping for the best, and breathing a lot easier now that the worst is over.
Apparently she had already told her mother that she was giving me her dog to keep since she wouldn't be able to take proper care of it any more.
Pictures in my "Family" thread. :)

Thanks very much. At least everyone got a warning shot so she can get the extra care to get her through the depression her health issues have put her into.

Looking up.
Her mother called me this morning to give he Sammi's #. She sounded really weak, but other than that, her conversation was clear. I'll be heading over to the hospital to visit her today. She's going to be okay, and I want to thank all of you for your concern.

Rolex, you're a good hearted friend. Your relationship with Seiko shows that. Sammi will remain in my prayers as well. Sometimes it can be hard to get your happiness back after a suicide attempt so her happiness is what I'll pray for.

What a relief. She's home now, and I spent some time sitting and talking to her.
I'm feeling a lot better about her situation.
Since drugs and alcohol were involved, the police report listed it as an attempted suicide. She had a friend visiting on the night it happened, and they had a couple of beers each. Two....She even showed me the empties in the trash.
Her friend nodded out, and so did she, but fell out of her chair. Her friend woke up about 3 AM and found her on the floor.
It was her normal dosage of the medication she had taken, but it resulted in a very bad reaction with the alcohol.
So, that's the REAL story and I don't have to worry about her harming herself. Even her mother thought she had tried to check out after talking to the hospital staff and getting the police report, but the facts no longer support that.

That is good news. It is unfortunate that law enforcement and the medical system automatically go to the suicide card, but it is understandable. They must make a judgment call that isn't always correct, but may be in the best interests of the patient.

Moral of this story: leave the alcohol alone when on medication.

I am so happy for her family as I am sure they are relieved!
