I'm planning on getting a 3rd channel radio and have no use for the 3rd channel. I was wondering if it was at all possible to get a cheap ESC and the Ofna Powerstart, HPI Rotostart, or Traxxas EZ-Start system and use the third channel as a push-button start from the controller? I thought it'd be cool, even though it'd eat up your battery. Whatever, just wanted to know.

Thanks,
Todd

Anything is possible if you have the tools, time and $.

I remember seeing a thread a long time ago where a guy had a remote starter... Just not the most practical I guess.

I think you first need to research the various starting systems you reference, because one of them obviously will not work.

As to the other two, I won't say it's impossible, but I'd venture a guess you'd risk causing an out-of-control situation by drawing so much power to start your engine from the batteries, but that's merely my opinion.

EDIT---
Thanks

Maybe If I could rig up an extra battery pack...like a custom built 2 cell or something. I'll have to try it sometime.

Thanks Ratzo, I was just asking myself that very question....

Spit, I suppose you could, but the ESC has to be plugged into your RX to get the signal and the RX gets it's power from the onboard battery pack. I guess you could get a splitter or something. Keep in mind you have to rig a way to heat the GP as well.

I'm not dissing your idea whatsoever, I just think you should take that creativity you have and apply it somewhere else than a self-start system, my man! Again, simply MY opinion! If you decide to try it, though, make sure you share any pictures of the process! I'd be interested in seeing what you come up.

Might be something for 1/6 or 1/5th scale, but not down in the 1/10th scale area. Battery limitations mainly, plus the weight of it all.

Creativity? This is Just boardem! If you have some Ideas you would like me to try, shoot!

I have the parts and extra money, I'm just waiting to go to the hobby shop to get a driveshaft, some more nitro cleaner and hex drivers.

Spit, save yourself the money on nitro cleaner, man. Instead, get yourself a gallon of Simple Green and a gallon of denatured alcohol. Mix two parts SG to one part DA and you've got a great nitro cleaner! A gallon of each will get you much further than LHS nitro cleaner!

Good luck getting your rig back on her feet!

I use denatured alchol on the outside but I was going to clean inside the engine.

Revo...yes I did. I got the tracking # but it says it hasn't been processed yet. Why?

You can use either the SG/DA mix or just straight DA to clean the interior of your engine as well. On the rebuilds I've done, after I break the engine down, I let the parts soak overnight, then scrub them with an old toothbrush and rinse with just straight DA.

My neighbor has a gas powered (4 stroke) airplane that has push button start on the controller. I have no clue how it works or even what the setup looks like but its pretty damn sweet when hes flying around and will cut the engine, then glide around for a will and *pop* it starts back up in mid air.

It's possible. But will require a lot of extra weight.
The Air craft starter is a great idea, but it doesn't have anything to turn the engine over. Airplanes have the air forcing the Impeller to rotate while it supplies current to the plug. On land that won't happen. This is what aircraft use...Ram Igniter...

What you would have to do is get an electric start kit like Traxxas, OFNA and Tamiya have and plug an ESC into the 3rd channel. Wire a 5-6 cell battery pack, better yet a Lipo pack since they are lighter, into the power of the esc. Then run the motor leads to the starter motor. Now you will just have to find a place to mount it all.

we tried it on a maxx last year....and it works....just not efficient when it comes to hauling around a 6 cell pack....If you used LiPo 7.4 pack you'd save on the weight...but you'll end up w/ a 100 dollar starter because you're too lazy to walk over and bump your car... on the maxx you can do a saddle pack and mount the batts under the chassis but on a buggy you're really pressed for space....oh and you dont need to use the ESC....a micro servo can have a switch from radio hack mounted to it...the 3rd channel on most radios is 2-position anyway so you have ON/OFF....
