Ipod help

My son gave me his Ipod for when I go walking or to the gym.
He lost everything that goes with it, but I have the charger and download cord.
He only downloaded like 20 songs (songs that I don't want to here).
Well I'm looking to load this thing up with songs.
Do I have to use "I tunes", or can I use any LEGAL site?
What site do you use?
Like I said, LEGAL!!

You have several options...

- Buy from itunes, and have your songs locked with AAC encoding, or saved as MP3 (the option is buried).
- Go with a a freeware solution, called MediaMonkey. It allows you to copy both-ways.
- Buy the cd and rip it to the drive, and upload using mediamonkey or itunes.

Either way, you'll want to save your music as MP3, because it is the more "common" format amongst music programs.

Keep in mind; when you plug that ipod into a different computer; itunes WILL format it. My neice found this out the hard way about a year ago.

Personally; I don't use itunes; I buy the cd and rip it to the drive (or sometimes buy the track thru napster), then use MediaMonkey to upload to the ipod. Beats having the file/folder structure sorted wrong.

You have a choice in AAC or MP3 formats... MP3 is going to be more compatible across several platforms (dvd players, some car stereos, most PC software, etc).

Any song you download from anywhere other than itunes will have to be converted to the ipod format. Easy to do but a PITA.

If you have a cd you want to put on the ipod, the ipod software will convert it during uploading.

IMO, itunes is just too convenient not to use with the ipod for downloading songs.

You may have to convert the tunes to work on your iPod, but at these prices, it may be worth it!

An ordinary mp3 file downloaded from anywhere will work on the iPod, it doesn't need to be converted, I used to have one. Just drag n' drop into iTunes.

Only if you have iTunes set to automatically synchronize with the hard drive. If you disable this option it won't format.

Agreed; I keep my entire collection in mp3 format because of this; and because of playing it in the DVD player sometimes, or in my car stereo (which supports 100 or so mp3's per cd). I also use my ipod with my mp3's.

I'm just one of the few that doesn't like itunes - it mangles the folder organization.

I love this site.
They charge by the file size and not by the song.
Dirt cheap over the other sites and for now its legal.

Yup! I downloaded three albums for my kids (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sponge Bob and Madagascar) for a total of $8.00 at CD quality bit rates. I then just burnt each kid a copy of each to play at night in their rooms.

Also rebuilt my Def Leppard collection because my cassette tapes are MIA. It's a great site!

Personally I'd steer clear. It doesn't look like a very professional site. They don't even let you browse before buying.
