First, Do crawler spec ESC's still operate with a reverse direction double tap to go in reverse ?
Or ... if moving forward reverse activates brakes, and if vehicle is STOPPED goes into reverse on moving trigger forward ? ( No double tap required )

Second, It there difference in let say low speed progression of start up to faster speeds ? Lets call it an exponential where a lot of trigger pull equates to a slowly rising motor RPM then progressively increases as RPM of motor ramps up ?

Thanks

Yep. That is exactly what EXP is on some radios. As for the throttle control, most ESC's have settings you can change for that to either fwd/rev, which the trigger works the same for both directions, no delay. Fwd/brake/rev which is trigger pushed forward will brake. Releasing and hitting again without triggering forward throttle will give you reverse. This is the best for bashers, since going from full throttle forward directly to reverse can rip gears, driveshafts, and diffs to pieces. Then there is fwd only. A lot of racing leagues do not allow reverse.

There are a lot of other settings too. Do you have a particular ESC in mind? What crawler are you looking at?
It is my KRATON Krawler conversion. Still using the OEM BLX185 ESC which is a double tap reverse and drives me nutz !!
The double tap to get reverse is go / no go many times as to get the reverse function consistently you gotta kinda stab the reverse and it relate to getting TOO MUCH a lot of times.

With crawlers, you want immediate forward and reverse. Braking is applied when the trigger is in neutral.
This is a crawler designed esc and brushless motor combo.
Actually my ARRMA rig goes that slow and controlled with the outrunner & 17-1 planetary.
Just the reverse function thats killing it when needing to "Gently" back up.
And like a tad more on upper end speed.
Yea that's a hard want running at a fixed gearing ratio

Oh, yeah. I'm not sure what's out there for large scale crawlers.
Was reading the HW manual on my XR8 PRO G2 that I'm using in my Basher Kraton along with a HW G2 4274 2200kv in sensored mode ... huh
ESC has fwd/brk, adjustable timing, Adjustable coast brake, drag brake, Motor frequency and brake frequency adjustablity and a whole slew of other options.

Perhaps running that motor / set up with my arriving 3.7-1 planetary gearbox may just be the ideal Motor / ESC combo ?

The only real crawlers I have exoerience with is the SCX24's. So it would be all guessing from me. I also have no experience with that ESC. I just ordered my first HW stuff in years. I'm more of a Castle/Tekin guy. I know our Tekin RX4 with Pro4 motor in our Ryft is silky smooth.

I'm assuming 1/10 scale here.

Kind of depends on what rig and what you want to do. If you running trails with a relatively stock truck, you probably don't need the super expensive stuff. If you are building a very capable truck I would spend the money.

The crawlers are about control, not speed. I have mine setup with reverse, no double, tap and full drag brake. The throttle is smooth but punch is a little higher than normal.

The reverse can save you from flipping over backwards on a hill. If you need to do a thing, you will be on the lid. There are occasions where you need punch to "jump" a gap. So I have like the throttle smooth, but if I pin it I want all the beans.

For the ESC/Motor

Brushled the HW Quicrun 1060 & Holmes Hobbies your choice. The higher end ones are nice (smooth, torque, quiet) but they are more expensive.

Brushless
HW Fusion (Motor ESC) 2300kv in the Traxxas. This is a 550 size motor
Castle Slate sensored motor with Copperhead 10 in the Base Camp
Also excellent is the HW Axe setup wtih FOC (friends) Red Cat Gen 8

Crawler motors are not basher motors. So if you go brushless you need to have a sensored motor and something that can talk to it, which means they probably should matched. The cawler motors different inside and made for control and torque not speed.

The exception to sensored, is out runner motors. They are brushless, very light and very torquey. But they can make horrible noises if you don't have the right ESC setup the right way.

LOL ... Yup down low they SQUEEEEEEL like a pig !!
Was not sure if the noise was ESC or Motor on NON Sensored set ups ?

JEROID,
The rig is full size 1/7 Approximate weighting about 17 pounds with huge AXIAL SCX6 wheels and tires. 4 wheel steer as well.

Yes, I remember seeing the build. Awesome.

I'd look at the large scale HobbyWing options
Hobbywing Xerun AXE 4274SD Waterproof Brushless Sensored Motor (2000kV)
Hobbywing Xerun AXE R3 Waterproof Rock Crawler Sensored Brushless ESC (2-6S)

You need SCX6 stuff, for sure. Maybe a bigger 1/10 or 1/8 ESC with instant reverse, plenty of drag brake and paired with a 550 sensored can would be able to drive your monstrosity?

You should really try driving a crawler esc, most modern setups are very smooth and the transition from fwd to rev is seamless.

Just a update after doing a slew of changes ...

Full Hobby Wing being a XR8 PLUS G2S ESC, Xerun 4274 G2 2250 motor, 42mm 3.7 to 1 Planetary gear box are now fitted replacing the previous components.

We are running fully sensored now and the ESC has ALL the program features wanted, Initial power rate, Fwd/Rev, holding brake rate, Frequency for on power as well brake with a lot of other features accessed via HW programmer.

In my initial testing we're near dead quite, no humming, squeeling or cogging .. It just works GREAT !!!
