I have AOL Instant Messenger and i have ran into a big problem. I can sign on and do everything else except talk to people. When I open up the window to send messages to the person, it soon after closes the window and signs me off of AIM before i can do anything. my friend said I might have a virus. I ran a full system scan and it didn't help. Any help will be appreciated, thank you.

Have you tried changing your password? Someone else might have it and might be messing with you.

Tried reinstalling it?

If you're using "Triton", try to use a slightly older version. Search for 'aim ad hack' on google, and you'll find one that should work for ya.

Also, have you got the appropriate firewall ports open?

Id uninstall it and then reinstall it. Sounds like ya just have a bug. Another thing ya might wanna look into is Adware SE for spyware (if ya dont have a spyware program yet). Whenever I sign in on my AIM I get mad spyware.. I dunno why. ANyway, ya can download it on www.Download.com But yeah, Id unistall it and reinstall it. That should work.

Well IMO your first mistake was loading Any thing AOL

Aol does blow, and causes me alot of probs to actually. I have unistalled and installed messanger like 4 times now. But I have some friends who I dont get to see and its basically our only means of communication. Thats the only reason why I put up with it. Now I have that "Triton" and it doesn't work to bad, but is slow loading.

try out "trillian" its free on download.com, and will handle your aim accounts and other messengers as well. no spyware or spam either. I've been running it for about 2 years now.

You could also go with the aim adhack. It removes all the ads from aim, including the spyware.

Part of Aims' stock installation is WildTangent, a known spyware program. It alledgely powers _some_ of the games. If you don't play the games on aim, it ain't needed. Run Spybot (www.safer-networking.org) and Lavasofts' Adaware (www.lavasoft.de). Run one, then the other. It'll take on the order of an hour to an hour and a half (pends on your system speed) total for both, but what one misses, the other gets.
