I need to know how to take music OFF the iPod and store it on an external HD. All I can figure out is how to remove it. I'm just trying to clear out some space without deleting the content completely. I can 'copy' but I can't paste.

Once I have it backed up, I can delete it from the iPod but still have an outside copy. Ya know?

well what you can do is to open itunes and make sure you have all your songs in your itunes library. After this plug in you external HD into your computer and when it shows up on your screen, what you want to do is go through your documents and find the folder with all your music in it. When you find that folder, click and hold the icon for it and drag it onto the icon for the external HD that appeared on your desktop screen. After that, all of the folder will still be on your computer, and on your external HD. Lastly, properly eject your external HD and all your songs are now on it. Hope this helped ya out Ralph!

i always used software. red chair or something like that....

If it's not an iPod Touch or iPhone, go into iTunes and select allow disc usage on the iPod properties. Then you can see it on your computer like an external drive. Then you should be able to cut and paste to another drive. The only thing that might happen is the IDv3 tags might get a little scrambled.

Well, so far, no cut and paste, no drag and drop. I've also done some reading, and there are things you can ONLY do with iTunes purchased songs.
I bought this from a member here about a year ago, and I'd like to transfer most of the music he put on it to my computer.
Getting anything ONTO the iPod is effortless. Getting it off without deleting it is the problem. I'll try the next suggestion now.

Ralph: I have had iPods and iTunes for years. The files are not MP3's and are copyright protected as you have discovered. You CAN copy and paste the files but all you will get is the music info, NOT the data.

I have never found a way to do what you are attempting. If you find a way please do share?

I found it, thanks to the link from Grgbulldog. It's in the iPod folder under I_control, and it didn't show up through 'my computer' or anywhere else I looked, only in Windows explorer.
It's transferring the music now, about a 40 minute process. When it's all safely in the external HD I'll format the iPod and start new.
I don't know where I'd be without the info I get from the members here.

A BIG thank you to all who helped out....again! :first_place:

EDIT:
Having read RC Addict's post, I'll report back after the transfer is finished to let you know if they are playable, either through iTunes or a media player.

Another EDIT:

Okay, they open in media player, so the music is there. However, all the info is not, but I read during my research that I can set something to download and add the info for any song from the internet.

Good to go.

If you've sync'd the ipod it's already backed up on your computer.

Here's where mine is:

C: \Documents and Settings\owner\My Documents\My Music\Randy&Carans_iPod\iTunes Media\Music

BTW all files are MPEG-4 on mine.

I use SharePod. It works AWESOME...and it's tiny and requires no installation ;-)

Thanks for the heads-up on looking thru explorer, Ralph. Gonna check on that now. I have some of my iTunes stuff transfered onto my HTC Incredible but a lot of the music needs to be upgraded to allow to be moved to non-iPod players. Going to see if this is the way around that little snafu!

RCA: To change the music from DRM protected .m4p format, just burn it to a cd-rom and use the option in iTunes to burn as .mp3.

As RC Addict said, I got the music, but not the data. What mayhem. If I want to play any of the songs, I have to double click it, wait for media player to open, and go through that routine for every song. iTunes really has a lock on this.
Somehow I'll find a better way to file them. Putting thousands of songs on cd seemed ridiculous.

What data are you looking for Rolex? All the ID tags are embedded into the MP3 files themselves (if you use MP3 format)...and the only other data would be your playlists.....which can be exported as well.

What do ya need off the iPod? :D

Everything is off it now. It's had a total reformat. I'll post pics of the files that I can only access through Windows Explorer.

I have had no problem buring CD's. It's transferring iTunes directly to a non-iPod player (ie my phone) that I am having issues with. I can burn the CD's and transfer that way, but like Ralph I get no song data nor cover art... I used Double Twist to transfer what I DO have on my phone, but a lot of it I downloaded before iTunes changed their per song rate. I have to get iTunes Pro and pay $75 dollars to upgrade the old stuff. Don't wanna give more of my cash to Apple...

Another victim of Apple. Jobs is very good at protecting his proprietary software and hardware...
