Well, this is a shame. I was playing around with my RC10. And man I was having a ball. The Odonell racing fuel was great. Then 90% through the tank. Engine revs went sky high, and the truck went NOWHERE... I don't know what the heck I did to it. Called a local pro and talked with him.

Bad news. The differentials got a problem, so he said. So after following the assembly manual, backwards of course. I ended up with a bare rear end. Then.. Tilted it on it's side. Boom 7 small bearings and two plastic things and a really cooked axle. Called the guy back up, and yep.. Differential in it just blew into bits and pieces. I got 6 of 8 bolts out, and what happens.. Two left friggin` strip out. Just like one of my motor mount screws...

Anyone know a good way to get a stripped allen head screw out? I have not a clue on that. And second of all... what the heck causes the differential to blow into bits?

This sucks the big dancing banana  :(

Depending on their location and whether or not you own a dremmel tool, you can cut a slot in the top of the screw heads (basically making slot head screws out of them), and then use a flathead screw driver to extract the stripped screws.

Your other option (and not a good one at that) is to drill the screws out. This I would do as a last resort.

Others might have some ideas for you, but the slot head screw solution is the one I use when I get stripped screws.

HEY! That's a friggin` Idea. Oh heck ya! Thank god I just bought that fiber reinforced cutting wheel!!! WOOHOOO... Must do tommorow.. I think I'm sick for work... heheh

Just make sure you do not cut too deeply. You need to leave enough of the screwhead intact to take the torque from the screwdriver. Good luck and happy to help.

Yea I have ruined several screws/bolts by notching them too deep.. Lucky they weren't on my maxx but one was on the
Backplate of a 5 horse briggs and stratton engine (destroyed the backplate with the screwdriver later)

The screw-out by Craftsmen does work good.

In the future, to prevent the stripping, pickup a GOOD set of allen hex drivers. OFNA makes a cost effective set and they are guarenteed forever. They key is to make sure they are drill bit blanks that they are made from. OFNA, Losi and a handful of others make them this way for the very reason of stripping.

I have actually pulled out buddies screws that were thought to be stripped with my drivers whereas they couldnt get it with there drivers. Makes a HUGE difference.

If the AE diff is anything like the Losi diff then it make have been too loose. Read through the book on how to tune the diff. After every coupld of tanks you will want to re-tighten the diff. Eddy prob has some good tips for the AE diff.

Keep in mind, the diff will be one of the highest maint. items on your ride if you dont keep an eye on it.

if you have a little patience you can jb weld an old allen wrench into the screw, wait for it to dry completely, then it should come out.

You could go to the local hardware shop and pick up an easy-out.
Easy outs work the best on stripped set screws because you have a hole already dead center. The one you need would run about 5$.

makes me wonder how long my duratrax stuff is going to last if it's all plastic parts.... donno jack about diffs.... :X

Well.. This is gonna be expensive.. Compared to the rest of my repairs..

My diff. rebiuld parts are going to be about 25 bucks total.

MIP rebiuld kit with diff libe is 10. I already bought bearings instead of those damned bushings (worthless POS's) Those are what caused the failure. Bearings were 10 bucks. Then the Diff lube and stealth tranny lube. New bearings and washers... About 60-70 bucks or more. But that's ok. I'm replacing the bushings. Which ran 10 of that. heheh

The bushings were COOKED. They used to be gold. The inside is a deep black. Ohh well. The parts should be in today around 4pm so... I'll be rebuilding again. Glad it just snowed. I know I can't play with it now so. :D

I'm not glad it snowed. :(

We got like 5 inches yesterday out of the blue. The damn road has to dry up again now.

Good luck with your repairs.

Well it's back together. Full rebiuld of the differential. Thrust balls and everything. Only thing I didn't put in new was the main diff gear and hubs. So far it has worked right, no running yet, going to do some pavement testing first. Then bashing season one is in. First period... Mud... heheh

Thanks for everyones help on the situation.

Glad to hear things are back together.

Take some pictures. So far, I'm the master of the mudpit (at least as far as pictures show--see the gallery). Show us some new stuff.

Well... in the latest downs in sunshine my cheapass camera doesn't like pictures. I hate to completely strip down my RC10 to the chassis to clean it this time. It was a mudcake. I couldn't even see the markings on the bodie. I hope I didn't hurt the motor. I know water splashed my air filter. But... Still haven't refired it since. I ruined a brand new pair of duratrax spiked low-pro's. :D 4 tanks of gas. And I was done. about 3 inches of mud was caked in the rear of my body. And the rear bearing on the left desintegrated itself into 12 pieces. :D Was damned fun I say. :)

Damn right. I love it to. :) On the box it even says, This remote control vehicle is not a toy. Then it should say, it's fun as hell, and goes like crazy. :)

I have to be conservative cause I'd rather not break parts. My LHS sells my truck RTR but I didn't see much in the way of parts aside from tires. If I went balls out like you and broke something I'd have to wait for the UPS man for week before I could run again.

Man you are in PA so you should have no issue getting stuff from tower in 2 days via priority mail..
I will not use UPS cause I am not supporting those poop brown "insert fbomb here" Piece of poop muther "insert fbombers here" I think you get the point from Tower to you is a short trip my man...X
