Hey guys just bought a savage xl 5.9 used and when i start it it seems like its idling fine but as soon as you touch the throttle it dies instantly and if u let it idle for like 20 seconds it will just cut n die. And also there is alot of unburnt fuel coming out at idle and the temp here is about 20 f. I'm kinda a newb for nitro but I'm pretty sure its running super rich and my biggest question is where to start and which needles to lean out... Thx in advance for any help

20 degrees???? If there is a lot of blue smoke it is running rich. Look for a tuning guide.

Lean the LSN until it will idle without dying, then slowly lean out the HSN until it runs up into the rpm without dying. Look in the nitrotalk sticky's and follow my guide for tuning.

Due to the weather being so cold, it probably isn't running rich. It may appear to have a lot of smoke coming out, but all engines do that in cold weather, it's mostly steam.

When did it last run before you tried it in the cold?

Cutting out and dying at idle has to be rich or the rpm would just go up. The HSN may be lean but I'm sure it's the same issue, you could be right though ;)

Oh thanks for the info I will have to take note! :)

That I'm not sure the guy said he had it running that day but i think he might b lying and what about the unburnt fuel part i have it sitting on top of a bucket and after messing with it for about 5 min theres a puddle about the size of a hockey puck

Just went through this myself. You are running rich. but I also found just because its rich at start up doesn't mean it will be once its warm. I had my truck out today same temps and had to hold the RPMs up with the throttle for the first min. or so and leaned it out very slightly but once warm it would sit and idle. Remember in the colder air it has to be tuned richer than say 60s. Dont do what I did the first time out and lean it out to keep it running just to over heat later.

That's a good point and quite true! That's also why I mentioned my tuning guide, because it states that you should not tune an engine until it is warmed up.

I dont know if its stated in your tuning guide or not but wrap the head with a sock or tin foil to help keep the temps up. Preheating with a hair dryer will help get them up also by starting at a warmer temp. I did today and still couldnt get my temps up, but if you leaned out any it was to lean for the high RPMs and would die out. Honestly to run in the 20 isnt really worth the fun. I went through a tank of fuel in about 10 mins just because of how rich I had to run.

Ya I've tried leanin a little but i dont wanna go to far id rather just wait rather than do engine damage trying to tune for the cold and like u were saying u had to hold the rpms up just to get it to idle. I can't even touch the throttle at all with out it stalling

I actually held the throttle open some while cranking only way it would start.

Maybe the idle gap is closed too much?

I think it's time to set the needles at factory, then richen the hsn some more for the cold.

I tried that first and it was just dumping fuel out of the exhaust

I had a similar issue over the summer with my xl because I changed fuel and after going back and forth with all 3 needles, it was my high speed needle that was out of whack. Get the engine warm and then put the high speed needle flush with the groove of the high speed needle housing. Then turn in the high speed needle 1.5 turns in from there. That should do the trick of it not idling and loading up on fuel.

Need to check your idle gap. It may be to closed if you set the needles back to factory in normal weather its to rich in cold its just about right at least on the LSN.

ok thx ill try that highspeed needle trck tomaroow when it warms up a bit since it 0 here

Leaning the high speed needle isn't going to have much effect on your idle, other than making your engine run hotter. Make sure you have a proper idle gap then lean the LSN little by little til it idles again.
If you can get it to run right by tuning it's either too cold out or time to tear the engine apart and look for problems.
