What you said makes sense but wouldn't it be the same if you broke it in in warmer temps it would act worn out in colder temps? I think I'm gona go with it and either have to buy a new motor when it warms up or will be a good motor. Plan to baby it alot in the cooler temps. I work at a steal plant in the ovens where we temper the castings and the temps are no where near what the motor gets to to temper the metal. When it warms up I will probably be telling yall you were right and hpi was wrong. Just hope it isnt that way but it is what it is to late now already started breaking it in in cold temps.

I'll try to explain but you will witness yourself once you get more run time and tuning in. When the engine is cold everything is tight, as the engine warms up to operating temps the parts will expand which is fine when everything is still tight, even after expanding (new engine) Once the break-in is complete, when the engine is warmed up, things aren't as tight as they were, rather matched and mated together. This is the point when the engine will run it's best and make the most power and unfortunately it only goes downhill from here as the parts continue to wear.

This is where you will see that when you start it cold, it will make more power then after it's fully warmed up. This is simply because things are tighter when cold then warmed up. It is even more evident when the engine is old and almost worn out, it will start fine but as it warms up and the parts expand, the engine will die as the fitment is just too loose.

Now if you were to take this engine that won't run when it's warm and run it in the winter where it can't get up to temp, the tolerances will be more tight and the engine usually will run ok.

And that's why we were stressing breaking it in when its warmer. It's easier to get the engine up to optimum operating temperature. That you ran a tank at 130 degrees or so started a chain reaction. That is were the damage was done (if there indeed is any as we surmise) and, as stated above, its all downhill from there. It's gonna run great now and not so great come this summer. Unless you got lucky (which can and will happen). It's all water over the dam now so have fun and let's see how it is in the spring.

I was getting some good temps out of it yesterday was running right at about 230 was up in 240's. Was ranging from 220-240. I've been babying it I have more than what the book and hpi called for breakin it in already still hasn't seen 2nd gear or thought about 3rd. Maybe will open it up a little bit today. It was warmer yesterday though temps in mid 40's.

When it was running that cool was just sitting on the stand at a idle pretty much. And the battery in my temp gun was going bad so could of been warmer than that idk. I hope it works out if not I'm prepared to buy a new engine. From what I've seen though its a H*** of alot better than the slayer and more what I want for bashing.

My cousin has a 4.6 he bought used we went to put he slipper I ordered for it online and the bearing wouldnt fit in the spur gear. Does anyone know how I could get the right spur gear? Not sure on the model of it he bought it used off ebay. And he threw away his old spur gear so dont have that to use. Dont really want to order a couple different ones and see which one fits.

Well I think ill be trying to send this back to hpi and get a new motor and wait for warmer weather lol. Took it out today it was around 50 no matter how I tuned it didn't have enough power to get out of 1st gear. Ran fine when i put it up few days ago. Not sure if its the motor or a different issue will wait and call hpi and see what they say. Ready to kick off the new year. Happy new years to everyone and hey I was wrong should of listened to you guys. Even though I'm prolly out a motor atleast I know this is the truck for me. Will deck it out and wait on spring.

Well she's off to hpi. I called them and told em what was going on said i should go ahead and ship it out to them. How long does this usually take?

When I sent in my from western new york and a holiday in the mix, it took about 3 weeks. That included time there, their bench time and then to send it back.
