My friend and I are rebuilding his gtx. We got sick of the pull start . So we took off the back plate to see if the savage roto start would work. Well it didnt the shaft was to big. So we got to thinking when dont we take a socket like this

And then weel got a thing to hook it up to a drill. The downfalls are is you can't have a deep socket and everytime you sue it you have to remove oneway. Plus this will only work with one ways that look like a nut. SO if anyone uses this please tell me what you think of it. not bad for a bunch of kids thinking of it.
 
2 things to be worried about:

1. What will you do to prevent the one way from backing out?

2. What are you going to do to prevent anything from enterring the engine around the one way? Think dust, sand, dirt, grime etc..

Yes, it works and will work. Just thinking of the big picture.
 
No you pull the oneway off everytime. in the future we will get a socket that will hold the oneway. just like my glow plug socket you can put the glow plug in there and it wont come out without force. If you mean around the staft i dont know. i didint know stuff could get in there.
 
I know this is already been done... but ill be damned if i can find it.....

It has a set screw to hold the oneway in the socket. I'm not sure to much can get past the oneway itself dirt wise... However the pull starter does offer added protection....

Then again I've seen guys remove the pullstarter and use a bump box with no probs for a long time without hassle of dirt.
 
yeah the Yank Eliminator works on most engines. The exceptions are engines where the shaft that turns in the back plate is free to slide out.

I made this crazy mod for my son's nitro hawk. It had a shaft that slide out. After going through all that, the whole drill start thing didn't appeal to me. Now that I have a starter box, I've seen the light. Starter box is the way to go if your RC can use one (ie Monster Trucks are stuck with pull starts, bump starts, drill starts and roto starts).

i have first hand experience here. i broke my pull-start and i really wanted to drive my car so i used a socket and a cordless drill. whoever said something about putting a set screw in the socket...good idea, I'm gonna do that. assuming you have some mechanical knowlege, just get a cheap socket that fits the hex of the one-way, drill a hole in the socket and tap the hole to fit a set screw. also get the adapter that lets you use the socket on the drill (some will be 1/4" square to 1/4" hex, some will be 3/8" square to 1/4" hex) and you may want to put a set screw on that too so you have a dedicated assembly for the starter and just put your drill battery on charge along with you glow starter. i hope everything works out for you. also, the one-way on my associated is 13mm and that size socket can be bought with either 1/4" or 3/8" drive
 
All good ideas! The only reason I brought up dirt and debris is that some one-ways are different then others. Ones that are a shaft that can back out from the engine are of biggest concern. It is a DIRECT entry point for dirt and debris. I.E., the stock .21 BB for the Savage. You would not want to do this on that mill. Too much exposure to the elements.
 
i used to do that on my rs4. The best way to do it is to silicone the one way bearing in the socket and use an extension to put in the drill
 
well on my engine, the one-way goes on the shaft, outside the engine. there is a bearing set that seals off the engine. one other thing i should have mentioned is to use a 6 point socket as opposed to a 12 point socket. to tell the difference, look at your socket. a 6 pt has 6 corners (points) and 6 sides. a 12 pt socket has 12 corners and looks more like a star than a hexagon. 6 pt sockets are stronger and generally fit better but 12 pt sockets are able to be put onto a fastener at more positions and so they are more versatile than a 6 pt. i hope this makes sence, feel free to elaborate if somebody else can do a little better job or can find pictures or something.
