I just got an email from eBay and it seems they are going to try and put a stop to the high shipping low bidding that has become a regular thing. They are loosing $$$ so you knew it would happen.

From eBay

"Fair Shipping & Handling
eBay is dialing up enforcement of fair shipping practices, so make sure your listings comply. Charge actual shipping costs; use eBay's free Shipping Calculator and specify crating or handling fees."

i bet they set the max amount of shipping it is messed up buy this i pod it cost 1 dollar and shipping is only 250, lol

The calculator takes the weight of the package (and dimensions if UPS,) queries the USPS or UPS site and returns a charge based on their weight tables. I know this because I have programmed shopping carts to do the same thing.

The shipping and handling fee is entered manually in setting up the auction.

The interesting this to see here is HOW they plan to enforce this, what, limit the S & H limited to a percentage of the auction opening or reserve fee amount? And what about weight, how will they enforce that? If someone is limited in the S & H fee somehow, all they have to do is enter 30 lbs for a 2 ounce item, how will they enforce it?

Whatever they do you can rest assured that your interests as a bidder are not the reason for this policy. What they are pissed about is sellers circumnavigating listing fees. This, in fact, is why you SEE these overbloated shipping fees. Sell something for a dollar, the listing fee is 35 cents. Post something starting at or reserved at $70, it's around $1.80, as I recall.

Secondly, it doesn't take rocket science to figure this out, while I agree this practice is deceptive, the truth is that they are playing on buyer greed.

Hear me out! :D If you dig around for a retail item and the cheapest you can find it is $35, off you go to eBay to see if you can skim off a few bucks. So when you see that item with an opening bid for a buck, HELL YEAH you're in - but then get pissed when the S & H is $30. The bottom line is if they seller doesn't make at least $31 on the deal he may as well not bother selling it at all. This is a simple fact of supply and demand.

BUT . . . he did decieve you into looking at the auction, possibly bidding before you fully looked it over, and is trying to rip of eBay for the listing fees. And THAT is why this practice is WRONG.

Agreed; and that's what rips my paper on shipping fees on items like the slipper shaft of a savage transmission. It costs maybe $1.45 for first class mail. How can you justify $7.50 for shipping? $1.45 for the postage, $3 for gas, and the rest for the hand-off to the carrier?

Yeah, but what's it retail for and what was your winning bid? :D You probably would save all of 50 cents by buying off eBay.
The 7.50 thing though - there is another reason for this one, if you ship **only** UPS, $7.50 is the smalled parcel they send.

Just another way a seller can avoid the fees eBay charges.

Shipping costs are not subject to eBay's final auction value fee or commisons.

I don't see a way they can possibly enforce this.

Yes eBay looses money on listing fees but they loose a lot more on final value fees because they don't include shipping into the final value fee. So you sell your item for $1.00 and charge $50.00 for shipping you only pay final value fees on $1.00.

They only have themselves to blame, you can't blame a seller for figuring out how to get the most out of his/her auction.

Between listing fees, final value fees, and paypal fees, they are already making more than I am off my stuff. Greedy Bastards! But I do hate inflated shipping and don't buy from sellers that do that, but they (ebay) are still a bunch of GREEDY BASTARDS! :D
