Hello from the new guy. Looking to get back into the RC world. Things have really changed since the 80s! I know I want an off road nitro vehicle. Don't know what scale, I read that 1/10 is the most popular? Don't know truck or buggy? live on the coast so it will probably see alot of sand plus rippin up the back yard. I think durability is probably a REAL good idea. The closest hobby shop is 2 hours away and they have horrible reviews so a good online store recomendation would be much appreciated. Well, actually any information or recomendations on what type vehicle etc. would be much appreciated. Oh, and I want to build it myself so I want a kit. Really enjoyed building the two I had when I was 16! Hope this is the right place to post this. Thanks so much for any responses!

Welcome to RCNT! As far as recommendations for off road starters IMO the traxxas Tmaxx or Revo. HPI Savage also is an excellent rig with great customer support. All 3 are 4wd and available in electric and nitro versions. I have a Tmaxx and a Revo and love my revo most. The handling and performance is just much better than the tmaxx. Though the tmaxx is a little faster because of a bigger engine for now. The revo makes up in handling. The savage by HPI is more expensive but worth it. HPI quality and support is what your paying for. A sturdy and for most part more dependable rig out of the box. Even though the tmaxx is a great rig you will find having to upgrade alot of the stock parts to better the quality and durability of the truck. Again this is just my opinion and do not wish to start the well known maxx vs savage war.

Quite honestly I would stay away from the sand due to the stress it puts on the drivetrain and engine. Of the 3 trucks mentioned above, I would go with the savage x. It's a great truck with a proven track record. As online sites go I would recommend towerhobbies.com, amainhobbies.com and rcplanet.com

Back in RC

I'm a REVO guy myself.Although it does'nt come in a kit the after market list for hopups just goes on for ever.

HPI Savage if you want the most durable out of the box and tons of after market hop ups. I'm also very partial to the Losi LST2/XXL platform as well. Traxxas kits have alot of aftermarket support too but there not as durable out of the box as the Savage but with the right hop ups they can be very durable

Thanks for the responses, they have helped point me in the right direction. What's the preference of scale? I've read that 1/10 is the most popular but there seems to be more selection in 1/8 scale. I'm starting to lean towards 1/8.

Well many of the engines sold by themselves don't have pullstarts because most people already have something there putting it in and have pullstarts to put on. If you don't get pullstart you have to get roto, ez start, or a starter box.

if your a basher, pull start is the best way to go. saves carrying a battery etc. as awesome as they are, for general bashing i find the ez start type systems annoying, get a pushglo and pullstart and you will never be disappointed. unless you break them :P but like everything, everything is breakable.

Better watch out for the sand. I was running my Tmaxx in sand one day and I ran through a puddle of water and then back into the sand and the sand stuck to my drive gears and completely removed the teeth on my clutch bell. I have not been back in the sand since.

Most of the Moster Trucks are 1/8 scale. There are some 1/10 scale but even some of the supposed 1/10 scales like 1 or 2 kits I can think of from traxxas are called 1/10 scale but are really close to 1/8 scale in size. 1/8 scale is gonna be more expensive but they are also handle terrain better so Id say if you have the money for it go for 1/8 scale

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help. I've decided on the HPI Savage X SS kit. I'd also like to say that HPIs website is what tipped the scales for me. The amount of info that they have available, along with their customer service is top notch imho. Thanks again!

Beachbum let me know how that HPI works out for you, I've been eyeballin one of those SAVAGES for about the last month or so

Revo, Revo, Revo. Hey I'm a 80s RC'er also. ( remember the frog?) haha anyway 1/10 is most popular by far in nitro. Truck or buggy is really where or what kind of terrain or track your going to blast. Track racing stadium truck are huge, I love my 4x4 traxxis slayer (fun off track also)2wd associate sc10gt is new, I'm buddy has it and i great too. Online retailer by far I'm a RCplanet.com fan. Go on their site look at your option, Good luck
