ok as most of you know i have been having clutch problems for like the last month. i have changed out the clutch disk and it didnt help. then i was told to change out the main clutch and i changed that out. now its really bad. the thing is slipping worse than ever and worse its making my engine go to dangerous temps because of it. can anyone help me out. i have a hpi rs4 mt. and oh btw is the clutch bell suppose to freespin on its own?

Yes, it does have a slipper. It's probably loose.

Yes Kbig, the c/b should freespin when the engine is not turning or at idle. I'm not familiar with that vehicle so I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "clutch disk" but it sounds as if your slipper needs to be tighter. The slipping got worse when you put in a new main clutch because now the main clutch grabs better and makes the slipper slip even quicker. I'm guessing you to tighten it. I can't tell you how though, not sure.

On a normal slipper clutch, there is generally a nyloc nut with a tension spring behind it. tighten the nyloc nut up (Clockwise) a quarter turn at a time, until you get the clutch to grip, but DO NOT do it too tight, if in doubt back it out. It's the only thing between you and a wrecked tranny system, that's why the slipper clutch is there.

hmm i guess i will loossen the spring then cuz i have it all the way tightened. what is weird tho is after i put in the main clutch the spring started backing itself off for some reason. now i have to constantly watch my temps cuz now it gets up to 270 and i accidently hit 301 at one time. i shut her off quick tho and let it sit for a good bit

god these thing is ticking me off. if i hold it off the ground and walk into the throttle it does just fine but as soon as it touches the ground it barely does anything. if i put a video of what it is doing will it help anyone??

Yep. video sure would help, especially if its focussed around the clutch & Slipper.

Also, if the slipper clutch nyloc keeps undoing itself, take nu nut off, put some nailvarnish on the thread and do it back up, then, go and get a new nyloc nut. Sounds like the nylon insert is knackered, it happens from constant doing up / undoing of the nut..

First off, since the nut is backing itself out, you definately need to replace it.

I may be confused but if it's slipping when the nut is tightened all the way why would you loosen it?

idk someone said it doesn't need to be overtightened. well it still slips even when the nut doesn't back itself off. like in that vid it wasn't backed off at all when i got done with it. i have some pics on the way for ya too upclose of my slipper and my main clutch. I'm dissasembling the whole thing to see if there is something tiny that i messed up

When you strip it down, check that there is a pressure washer betwen the spring and the main gear. Also, reference your manual !!!

http://s669.photobucket.com/albums/vv58/KbigO69/?action=view&current=DSCF0158.jpgno manual bought it used. i might have found one of my culprits but not too sure just yet. the main gear you are talking about. i found out that i installed the wrong thing in between it and the tension spring so now the main gear is flatten onto the spur gear. there is no way of me getting the spur get off now besides breaking it :( idk if tht could have caused it to slip tho. I've inserted some pics and if ya would go thru them( i have about 7 pics in there) and see if you notice anything. thanks

That's not the MT2, that's the older NitroMT (RS4 MT) with the slipper upgrade on it. (that's more of a statement for myself ;))

This:

I have no idea what spur it is though.

Might be hard to get help with this. Pretty old parts.

This is the one for the MT2:

It used a savage spur gear. May want to upgrade to that. I believe all you need is that and the MT2 center drive cups with pins.

Is there a one-way bearing on the main gear/in the tranny? If there is, you should take that out and clean it really good in denatured alcohol, and clean the shaft it rides on really well.

That's the engine's one way bearing behind the rotostart backplate, i think he's reffering to if there is a one way in the tranny system to lock out any option of reverse.

not sure... only "one way" to tell :hehe: and thats to fit it. but try and get ur original set up going first.
