Hey all.
I'm wanting to get a good crawler. What is a good starter that is somewhat affordable? Thanks for the advice in advance...

The best option out there for someone to get started with new is the losi night crawler. The other ones out that are cheaper, are pieces of crap and you would regret buying them.
You could also look for a used crawler, like a ax10,xr10, losi nc or cc, bully, berg and of those will be a good option.

If you want to get into a nice comp crawler though, you will need to look into a Bully from rc4wd, a Losi Comp Crawler or an Axial xr10. But those routes will cost you alot to get setup properly.

What a proper setup? I'm a total rookie when it come to rc crawler. Real crawlers I'm golden, but the little ones not so much...

A good comp crawler setup will be on moa axles (motor on axle, 2 motors) like bully's, bergs, xr10's or a converted losi CC.

You would need two motors, integy's would work to get you started...$20ish each.

A good esc, Sidewinder, Mamba, FXR or Holmes....$80-$120ish.

BEC....$20ish

High torque servo, ATLEAST 300 oz....$80 on up.

A dig switch from Punk rc....$70-80

A 3ch radio....$100 on up.

3s lipos.....

................................................................................................................

That would get you started on any of those setups.

But if you want really good setups, you really gotta spend some coin.

What I'm running on my current comper (electronics wise)

two Team Brood 45t motors....$120

two HH ESC's.....$200

BEC.....$20ish

Hitec 486oz servo...$1??? I forget how much is was

Futaba 4pk radio ......$500ish

4s lipo.......

Thats about what it takes now days to have a really comptetive rig depending on who you comp with. All the guys in my club are all on MOA axles also with atleast the setup I listed first and some with the same setup basically as me as far as handwounds and very high end stuff.

Yeah base. Once you start upgrading axle parts and go into custom chassis, suspension, wheels, tires yada yada yada you will be way over a grand.

Well Lloyd you beat me to it, Being competitive is not cheap, LOL!!! And I would second all of his suggestions, If I knew what I know now back when i started I would not have put the hundreds of dollars I have into my Axial AX10, it crawls very well for a shafty but the MOA rigs just have the advantage...
