Hey guys,

How do you know if your TV supports 1080i? I bought it about a year and a half ago. It is a Sharp Aquos 45" LCD. I just got a HD DVR and it has the capability to transmit in 1080i. When I select the 1080i I get a picture, but I am not sure if it is 1080i or not. Will a TV that is not capable of 1080i still broadcast a picture transmitted in 1080i? Thanks guys.

Tom

If you select 1080i on your player, your TV will play it if it is capable. If not, you will get some distortion in the picture, or it will not show at all.
Try selecting 780i and see if there's a noticable difference. You might also want to refer to the TV user's manual to see if it supports 1080i.

I have tried the manual and despite it being the size of a novel, no joy. I can't seem to find out if it supports it or not. I know when I hooked up my PS3 to it, it showed a small screen at the top of my TV that said HDMI and then 1080i underneath it. Again.. I don't know if it was my TV or the PS3 showing that message. I am just worried that I might be burning out my TV.

No worries. It won't harm the TV. If you get lines or distortion on the screen, then it won't produce 1080i. If you get a clean picture, you should be good to go.
Some units (I don't know if it's the TV or the player) will automatically put out in 780i if it's incapable of 1080.
If you can't find the info in your TV novel, try a search, or ask on an electronics geek forum.
Forget about asking a salesman in the store.

i'm quite sure that the aquos line of TVs are capable of running 1080i. i actually think they'll run 720p as well.

i have a PS3 as well, and any message on the TV is the TV reading its source, so if it said 1080i, then you're good to go. honestly though, if you can run 720p, you want to be in that mode instead. it's a much cleaner picture, i feel. it's constant (or progressive) instead of alternating (interlaced).

check it out. what you might do to... google your exact model. 'name of TV and model number specs'

from there, it will tell you directly. cheers!
