I'm considering, (emphasise on considering) buying my 15yo son his first (our first) proper hobby grade rc plane for Christmas this year.

We've only ever had the cheap foam rc planes. A WLtoys Cessna 182 3ch and a FX Cessna 182 2ch.

He has shown interest in the past for flying but we are always disappointed by the handling and reliability of the above planes and the limitations of the requirement for perfect weather.

What would you recommend for a beginner?
It must be RTF as we don't have a controller.

I was considering the HobbyZone Carbon Cub S2 1.3m RTF Basic, as I've seen it recommended in the past and its within budget, just.

We don't know much about RC planes.
Are there other options within budget? Is that plane too expensive for a beginner?

I started with the Carbon Cub S2. Easy to fly and to learn on.
I've mentioned before I took the GPS system out of it and flew it with my own electronic.
My RealFlight 9 take all the credit for that, first flight was perfect.

It will accept the Spektrum DX6 transmitter which I have but never seen the reason to use it. Off the top of my head, I don't remember the exact model,
it's been too long since I've used it.
Not sure what other transmitters will work.
The RealFlight simulators are an excellent training tool, it's how I learned and as mentioned, my first
flight was perfect and that was without the training mode.

I've never flown a plane but thought about it.

How easy are they to crash?
Very. I have Some solo time and 48 hrs on a C-152 cessna and thats full scale and I had a few crunchers on the foamy rc birdies. Hot glue, tooth pick and acrylic paint are your best friend. Aircraft are like sharks, they have to keep moving through the air to keep the wings airfoil lifting the airplanes weight. A good book might be a step in the right direction.

Beginner birdy? Cub s2, so easy to fly its silly. Apprentice is bigger and better for the high winds that seem never to leave.

Pfffft. I can crash better than you with my eyes blindfolded and both hands tied behind my back! 😝
This is exactly what I tell people when they inquire about the crash 🙄
