ESC's and your radio

Hey guys,

I have recently... (About 6 months ago) got back into Electrics. I was reading last night in my EMaxx users manual something I didn't quite understand. It said if I want to use a different radio and reciever setup, I had to change all sorts of setup info in the radio that I had no idea what the hell they were talking about. From setting EPA to setting the trigger to 50% pull... The more I read, the more I was confused. So my question is this... Do I need to do anything special to the radio setup with electrics? I guess to specify further... is there something special I need to set becuase of the ESC? Thanks guys.

what radio are you going to be running? or are you even going to be switching to a new radio?

shouldnt have to reset the esc with a new radio. all of the adjustments will be in the radio, if its a computer radio then it all depends on what you like, and what feels right to you. there isnt really the a certain way that thins have to be. its how you want them.

I am using a JR XS3 radio.

I didn't think you would have to set anything different, but according to the folks at Traxxas.... I need to be thinking other wise. Of course they could just be trying to discourage you from using anything other than their TQ set up.

oh of course traxxas is going to turn down your thoughts on using a differant radio, which is of course going to be better then their crap. lol

I will do some more reading on this. Just for GP.... what does setting the throttle for linear to Expo do when you are working with an ESC for throttle input?

The reason they want you to change the actual physical throw of the trigger (usually as simple as turning an adjuster on the handle of the radio; covered in the manual), is for linear reverse/forward throws. You can actually leave it at 70/30 (the stock setting).

Now, as for what to do... Don't worry about it. It's a Novak ESC. Simply follow the directions on setup for the ESC only, and you're golden. It will "memorize" the throw of the trigger, regardless of EPA, EXP, Center trim, etc. Just make sure they're all set to neutral/center (if you are starting with a "fresh" radio, again, don't worry about it).

It's only the steering you'll have to worry about.

It does just that, it makes the throttle response linear when you pull the trigger. 5% trigger pull will give you 5% throttle, 10% trigger pull gives you 10% throttle etc. When you increase the exponential you increase the sensitivity of your servos around neutral. If you have low traction conditions, you can decrease the throttle exponential to help keep from spinning out. If you have a car with twitchy steering, you can decrease the steering exponential to slow the initial steering response.

On your Novak ESC, there might be a setting for minimum drive percentage. There will be if you are using your 6.5HV. The minimum drive percentage is similar to increasing the throttle exponential, it increases the amount of throttle input around neutral to give more power upon takeoff. You can play with this setting and adjust according to traction conditions.

Ok... I think I understand. Thanks for the info. After I read that in the Traxxas manual I started thinking about how the radio settings would effect the ESC. I mean it is not like adjusting a throttle servo on a Nitro. I will read more about the ESC and take the info I have here and apply it accordingly. Thanks Guys.
