i have a report due next week friday for english. i have to write 2.5 to 3 pages on an writer. in my report i have to write about the writers life and memorable moments. i also have to write about 2 pages of quotes for short stories and poems.

my problem is i dont know how to write a quote. since my teacher is in college and figures we are all going to collega next year she wants the quotes to be just like they should be done in college. she showed us in school a while ago but i didnt get it then or now.

all i remember is that it has to include where i got if from, who wrote it originally i guess a website and some other stuff.

I'm preety sure there are some college students here. I'm really hoping you can give me some pointers. oh yeah I'm doint this on Edgar Allen Poe. I've done everything else i dont get how to do the quotong. she made it sound all confusing.

I think you are talking about a Bibliography right? You have to be able to reference where the quotes you used are located. So you have to get the info and be able to show it.

Check this link out...EXAMPLE

thanks busted and jon. i think I'm starting to understand this.

me and my teacher go at it all the time. i personally dont think I'm going to need this. reason being I'm going to a trade school majoring in automotive. i could care less about some writer. my teacher says well how do you know? then i say well last time i checked it wasn't a crazy write who was in love with his cousin who built the fist automobile. then it will die out and we will go at about something else. she knows i dont like her and she possibly dont like me. on the other hand she gave me a 85 on my report card.

sorry thinking out loud.

oh if you want to know where i got my avatar from igot it from where i got a couple of my others

Danny, no matter if you attend a trade school or medical school, being able to read and write proper English is paramount to your success. It may suck having to write a specific report on an author, and you may be right, you may never have to submit a report on an author to an employer, but you may have to submit a report.

Let's say you work yourself into a management position at a trucking company and you're in charge of the garage area. At some point, you will (I guarantee it) have to submit a report summarizing the work activities of your shop including financials on money spent on repairs and the like. Included in this report will be your request for budget money to either expand the shop, update tools, increase your headcount, additional training for your technicians and the like.

Your personal success and the success of your department may very well hinge on how well you prepared this report and part of that is your ability to communicate effectively via the written word. I find it extremely ironic that, as the world continues to evolve towards electronic messaging consisting primarily of written communication, there is actually a de-emphasis on basic writing skills and an increase in the use of I'm shorthand, like "R U OK".

I'm not singling you out by any stretch, so do not take anything personally from this. I'm merely suggesting that, rather than fight your teacher because you are going to a trade school, try to learn it to better yourself. Proper English is not reserved for those with college degrees, it is required (at least in my opinion) of anyone that lives in works in this country!

Anyhow, good luck with your report. Just curious, what author did you choose?

Danny would it be possible to change your avatar. I gag every time I see it. This may sound scarcastic, but I'm totally serious.

....ahem....WUSS....ahem...wuss! LOL Just playin.

I agree with MW, just because it may not seem to be relevant in your career, doesn't mean it will not help you out. The best things in life can be done with just your mind. If you enrich your mind with knowledge you won't have to choose to do labor work. Granted, I understand that with hard work you can still achieve great things; it's just that giveing yourself that knowledge can be benificial to you in so many different ways then you probably can think of right now. I find myself surprising myself on things I haven't used since High School. Been 12 years only but still it helps me out now.

You seem like a great kid with goals and soon to be a young man that will acheive those goals. Just don't give up on things that you think is a waste of time. Your teacher is there for a reason, to help you prepare for things later in life.

Good luck on your report!

Your friend

Jon

Read this over and over danny...it's great advice, and also very true about a report that you may have to write down the road. Cause in the line of work your going to be going into...guaranteed.. you'll be up for a report writting of some sort. It may not be soon, but it will come. IMO
